Happy birthday, Meg Lavey

The VizEds birthday genie sends out Happy Birthday wishes to the talented Meg Lavey of the Arizona Star, who turns 27 today.

Wow. If I had only been so talented and so motivated when I was 27.

Megan is fresh off her second consecutive year working as a gopher at the SND judging in Syracuse.

Ananda Walden moves to The Hartford Courant

One of my favorite young designers is joining The Hartford Courant.

David Frazier of The Kitsap Sun announces:

It’s with great regret that I announce the departure of Ananda Walden.

In her too-brief time at the Kitsap Sun, Annie has made an important contribution to the presentations team. Her enthusiasm to try new things quickly became apparent. Early on, she took over the reigns of A&E. You could see her breezy illustration style growing week after week, to the point where I couldn’t wait to see how she’d tackle the next cover story.

Her willingness to try new things led her to designing the A section and sports, as well.

Annie has accepted the position of features designer at The Hartford Courant. Her new opportunity takes her back East – in the vicinity of where where she had such a splendid internship at Newsday.

Annie’s last day at the Sun will be March 17. Please join me in wishing her the best of luck in her new job.

Here’s the official announcement by the Courant’s Melanie Shaffer:

After an intense search for just the right creative soul to fill the void left by the talented Nicole Dudka, we’re thrilled to announce the addition of Ananda Walden to the Hartford Courant staff. Ananda is a young energetic journalist with a flair for the fine arts and illustrating. We expect she will fit right in and make her mark in features implementing the Courant’s design philosophy.

And the Courant couldn’t have made a better choice. I’ve Ananda

And the Courant couldn’t have made a better choice. I’ve been a fan of Ananda’s work since I saw her University of Nebraska student portfolio at SND/Houston.

Readers upset at ‘Funky Winterbean’

Editor & Publisher reports today that readers of at least two U.S. newspapers were offended at a sequence in the Funky Winkerbean comic strip that showed a character being blown up by a hidden bomb in Iraq.

First, the sequence. Three strips, which ran Thursday though Saturday:

Funky Winkerbean sequence

Editor & Publisher reports:

In a Saturday note to readers, Columbus (Ga.) Ledger-Enquirer Executive Editor Ben Holden wrote: “… the … strip at issue had no contextual labeling and should never have run in our paper. For the failure to identify the problem and spike the material, I take full responsibility and apologize to the men and women of our Armed Forces. We have internally implemented review steps to more closely monitor syndicated material. Also, I have spoken directly with our liaison at King Features and with Mr. Batiuk. I have mandated that we get a ‘heads up’ when such sensitive material is being transmitted, or, I told the liaison, we will cancel part or all of our business relationship with King.”

…The Fairbanks (Alaska) Daily News-Miner also reportedly received a call from an upset parent.

It should be noted that Columbus is near Fort Benning, from where many of the troops now in Iraq originate.

Outsourcing to India: Wave of the future?

Michael Mechanic of The EastBayExpress blog reported Friday that an advertorial section in Sunday’s San Francisco Chronicle contained articles written by free-lancers in India.

The company selected [to produce the suppliment] was Mindworks Global Media, a New Delhi-based firm — slogan: “Trusted by editors worldwide” — that offers editing, design, and “content creation” services… “A significant number of stories for any publication can be written from anywhere, irrespective of geographic boundaries, if a high-level of domain expertise is combined with superior journalistic skills to get information, analyse it correctly and write in an engaging manner,” [Mindworks’ Web site] states.

It’s difficult not to be alarmist about this. Some of us have been making jokes for years, now, that we all could find our jobs outsourced — especially since thinks like local content seem to be falling by the wayside and pre-packaged, ad-friendly, yet perhaps poorly-conceived content often seems to be the way to make a fast buck.

If we’re going to worry, though, let’s really worry. Here are a few samples of Mindworks’ newspaper and magazine pages:
