Happy birthday, Rick Tuma

The birthday bird offers happiest wishes to the enormously talented Rick Tuma, an Assistant Multimedia Editor for the Chicago Tribune graphics department.

I have no idea how old Rick is today. Therefore, we’ll just have to take a stab at it: Rick turns 87! WooHOO!

Here’s a sample from several years ago. There used to be this basketball player, y’see,  by the name of Michael Jordan…

Rick doesn’t have a portfolio posted at NewsPageDesigner. But he does have his own site. Check it out here:

Rick Tuma’s talent carries over to his character. One of the most talented artist/illutrator/cartoonists I have had the grace to know and work with. Always a calming, creative, cooperative and patient multi-tasker. He may not be the No. 1, but in my opinion he is way ahead of No. 2. Two others should rank with him — Ravenscraft and Hancock.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRIEND

If memory serves me Rick should have retired a few years back, he must be in his late 60’s by now. AARP has been after him for some time now, Rick they need those dues.

Back when I was his ole pod-mate I can recall vividly one day when AARP called Rick and he would deny he was that old. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but we were less than 6 or 7-feet apart. Mild mannered as Rick was I have never known him to choose such words, until then. Words that in good conciseness I can not repeat here and then he will abruptly hang up. With a gentle smile Rick would turn to me and say those darn bill collectors, but he wasn’t foolin’ me, oh no!

Well, now I just hope he comes to his senses and allow himself to cash in those social security checks he’s been stashing and hiding in his toys. That’s just not right!

    Happy Life Anniversary!

Happy Birthday, Rick, from your old boss. Remember the “good ole days?” We had some real great times working together! Do you remember giving me an original “Rick Tuma” (an OP-ED drawing)for my birthday? That was exactly 25 years ago this March. I still treasure it! It’s framed and sitting on the credenza in my office. Let’s get together soon. With highest regards, Al Knudsen

  15. Kevin Says:

    And the hits keep comming,
    Rick,
Congratulations on surviving another year. Even though you only have a “few” years up on me I feel the days going by ever so quicker as of late. Memories start flashing accross your mind of what you were doing in the sixties, because you can’t remember what you did yesterday. Hey, I would like to be 42 as well, may I borrow that thought for my next birthday? Take care, enjoy and keep believing. Kevin

  16. Kevin Hand Says:

    Mr. Patumahead,

Maybe if we cut one of your graphics in half, we could count the rings like in a pine tree. Of course, we could just count the figurines in your cubicle and divide by the number of graphics you have done, multiply by the amount of love everyone has for you, and add the number of kids you have to get your age. Anyone?

    Love ya, man.

    Kevin
