VizEds-funded scholarship awarded

It’s my honor to announce…

You may recall the raffle we held at the VizEds luncheon in Orlando. You raised a lot of money that day to help fund a scholarship for visual journalism at Robb’s alma mater, Eastern Illinois University.

It’s time to hand out that money.

James Tidwell, chairman of the journalism department at Eastern Illinois, writes:

The winner of the Montgomery Scholarship for 2007-08 is Marco Santana.

He is a junior from Carpentersville, Ill., and a graduate of Dundee-Crown High School. He has held various leadership positions at The Daily Eastern News including associate sports editor, sports editor, campus editor and lead designer. In the fall he will be editor-in-chief of The Daily Eastern News.

Fabulous news. An Eastern Illinois grad who won that scholarship during his school days? Mike Rice of The Arizona Star. Thanks to VizEds, another talented student will receive this award.

Want to know more about this particular scholarship? Rob posted this a while back, quote from the university’s web site:

The Bruce Allen White Montgomery Memorial Scholarship for Graphics/Journalism. Established in 1991, this scholarship is awarded to a member of the student newspaper staff who is of “outstanding character (and) whose action and conduct reflect credit upon Eastern Illinois University,” who is in good academic standing, who had completed at least 30 to 90 semester hours of study, and who demonstrates talent as a graphic artist.

Rob posted last fall that the Orlando raffle raised $300. A member of the VizEds community was kind enough to match that amount, bringing the total to $600.

Recipients of the scholarship normally receive $400. Thanks to VizEds, this year’s winner will receive $1,000.

Congratulations, Marco! And best wishes from everyone at VizEds!

And thanks to you, VizEds, for making this scholarship possible.

  1. Mike Rice Says:

Congrats Marco. And thanks to VizEds for helping to support this.

    Go Panthers.

  2. Mary Says:

    Congrats Marco!
This scholarship is named for Bruce, a child who never lived long enough to achieve professional greatness, and inspired by his brother, Robb, who did.

I recently read a saying, “Live Loud, and NEVER let anyone tell you to turn it down.” Well, Marco, as recipient of this scholarship, crank up the volume and live your dreams. There is nothing you can’t accomplish.

    Best wishes,
    Mary Montgomery
(a.k.a. Robb’s wife, Eastern Journalism Class of ‘90, and former Editor-in-chief of the ‘90 Warbler yearbook.)

  3. Joe Gisondi Says:

Thanks to all for funding this award. These scholarships are a great assistance to our students, who often struggle to pay for college. Marco definitely lives up to the standards set forth for the award. He is a sharp, hard-working, ambitious student. He is already designing pages for some new weekly content areas; plus, he is tweaking the design of the newspaper elsewhere. He is definitely pursuing his dreams. Thanks for your continued support.

  4. Bryan Murley Says:

Wow, small world. I look forward to meeting Marco and lots of other talented EIU students this fall when I join the faculty there to teach online journalism. And congrats on the scholarship.

  5. James Tidwell Says:

On behalf of the journalism faculty and students at EIU, I want to thank everyone who contributed to the scholarship. It is greatly appreciated.

Mike Rice, Mary Montgomery and Rob Montgomery were top-notch student journalists when they were at EIU. In fact, the 1990 Warbler is probably the best yearbook published at EIU in the 20 years I’ve been on the faculty. Mary was editor in chief of the ‘90 Warbler and Rob was art director and photo editor.

    Thanks to all,

My parents established and endowed this journalism scholarship 16 years ago to honor the older brother I never knew - Brucie - who died tragically in a car accident before reaching his second birthday.

When Jeff Schnick proposed two years ago to me that VizEds should rally around helping out a scholarship I remembered that there is a great lineage now of visual editors who have come out of that EIU program including Cassie Armstrong, Matt Mansfield and Chris Soprych (Who I think was one of the first winners of this scholarship if I am not mistaken.)

Congrats to Marco - I think it’s a strong message to all that the top visual editor will be the EIC of the paper in the fall.

Seeing the faces, naming the names and knowing the history of this award will make it easier for all of us to gather the energy to do a fundraiser lunch every year.

Congrats to Marco and all the future Montgomery scholars at Eastern. I had a great time working with Marco when I was still in school and I can’t think of anyone more worthy. I look forward to see what the Daily Eastern News does under his leadership. Way to go Marco, VizEds and Eastern.
