Happy Fathers’ Day

I hope all you fathers out there are having a great day today.

Here’s a picture of my Dad, taken Christmas Day, 2006:

Dad with Brent Musburger

He’s holding one of the presents we gave him, a Brent Musburger action figure.

My dad has a bit of a history with Musburger. Dad has lived in or near Augusta, Ga., for many years. He sometimes works as a security guard at the Augusta National Golf Course. Several years ago, he was forced to deny Musburger entrance to the press tent — Musburger didn’t have his press credentials with him.

My dad’s been through a lot this year. His father-in-law died, his wife has been sick and he spent a week in the hospital with ulcers. He says he feels pretty well now, though.

We’ll visit him and his wife later this month.

Meanwhile, my own Fathers’ Day has been a great one. My wife and daughter gave me that book on the Associated Press that I mentioned a while back…

…Plus a box set of Star Wars movies. My daugher and I watched the original movie last night. Just wonderful. And they took me out to dinner at Outback.

Please call your Dad and tell him you love him.

Yeah. He hears that a lot. he grows out the beard in winter, but the rest of the year, he trims it a lot closer.

A couple of years ago, we were in a barbeque restaurant in Augusta when one of the other customers noted that Dad resembled the portrait of Robert E. Lee hanging on the wall. Without missing a beat, Dad wisecracked:

“Yeah, and like Robert E. Lee, I lost every battle I ever fought.”

Not historically accurate. But funny enough to make me squirt Diet Coke out my nose.

He could probably do a mean impersination of Colonel Sanders? if he had the white suit.
