I’m in ur dpartmnt, writn ur style guide

Miranda

Miranda Mulligan, as photographed by The Pilot’s Sharon Plawin Tuesday, as the hours counted down to the launch of The Virginian-Pilot’s new redesign.

Miranda and Bob Voros did most of the heavy lifting of the graphics department’s share of the redesign. Bob concentrated on map styles and masterminded our new weather page. Miranda built our graphics style guide and damn near all of our new graphics templates and starter files.

In addition, John Earle worked up prototypes for our new crime maps, which start next week. Ken Wright and our intern, Allisence Chang, pitched in, too, with converting our massive arsenel of standing elements and file pieces.

Naturally, you’ll be wanting all the juicy details about the redesign…

Deputy Managing Editor for Presentation Deb Withey wrote a wonderful piece that about the redesign. It ran in today’s Pilot. An excerpt:

This creative design will remain organic, driven by the news. We will not become a templated newspaper where various stories play in the same spot every day, leaving little room for surprise.

…So yes, the design that will unfold in the days ahead has taken much thought, more than I express to you now. What I wish for most is that you’ll feel the passion in our work and know that newspapers are indeed very alive, and will continue to be, as long as people appreciate the printed word.

I invite you to grow with us.
