Barbie DeSoto to join Salt Lake Tribune

The Virginian-Pilot’s summer design intern, Barbie DeSoto, will be joining the staff of The Salt Lake Tribune.

Tribune AME/Design Josh Awtry writes today:

Barbie stepped onto the international stage as a finalist for SND’s The Intern competition, but had been doing great work at BYU’s paper, The Daily Universe, long before that.

We’re thrilled that Barbie is coming back home to Utah. Any time the state’s newspaper can call home one of their own, it can only mean good things for the paper and the people involved. She’s got an intensely bright future ahead of her, and I’m glad we can be a part of it. The Tribune is a paper in the middle of rapid change, and I can’t think of a better person to help us shape that change than Barbie.

A native of Southern California, Barbie graduated from Brigham Young University this spring.  She’s a big music fan — she collects vinyl albums and plays the drums. She minored in French and says she wants to travel there one day to improve her language and cooking skills.

Barbie started her internship here on May 16, so I presume she’ll be here through Aug. 5 or 7 or something like that.

Barbie has been a lot of fun to have around. I’ll be sorry to see her go. At least she’s going to a good home: Josh is a fabulous teacher.

A couple of examples of Barbie’s work so far this summer, here at the Pilot:

Well, Josh has pretty much said it all but I, and everyone on the design desk, am thrilled to have Barbie joining our team. She brings the creativity, skills and energy we need as this paper tries to take “it” to a whole other level. Again, welcome Barbie — we can’t wait ’till you get here.
