Freep’s John Fleming leaves the business
Veteran graphics editor John Fleming of The Detroit Free Press writes this weekend:
It seems my time in journalism has come to an end.
Effective Friday, I worked my last day at the Detroit Free Press, and in 9 days I start a new job in a new area in a new field. I’ll be the Senior Data Graphics Editor for The Heritage Foundation on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
Needless to say, this is quite a switch for me on several fronts, but the job is filled with potential, and we’ll be relocating to Virgina where we have many family ties. As you might imagine, we’re excited yet anxious, and we’re making the change fairly quickly.
While I hate to see someone like John leave newspapers, I can certainly understand why he’s moving on. The business is looking a little scary these days.
John leaves a huge seven-year legacy at the Freep. AME Steve Dorsey says:
John’s biggest impact was always in coordinating and elevating folks, like in our recent fentanyl series, where three different artists drew still graphics and then rendered their own entirely different conception motion graphics.
 Find that project here: www.freep.com/fentanyl
Dorsey continues:
He was also instrumental in the construction of such local hits as creating a series of trading cards for a rec league hockey team when the NHL lockout happened; or working with artist Martha Thierry to create the entire roster of Detroit Tigers as downloadable masks for the 2006 World Series run (dove-tailing with their own season-long campaign of “Who’s yer Tiger?”). Part of his send-off Friday included us constructing masks of HIM!

In addition, Dorsey, naturally, is seeking to replace John. If you’re up to such a challenge, click here:

Best wishes in your new career, John!

Congrautlations John on the changes in your life.
It was good seeing you at SND, and catching up after our stints together at the Mesa Tribune.
