Notre Dame fights back in battle for internships
Notre Dame’s j-school has found a way around the shrinking number of intern positions, according to Tim Dougherty of the school’s alumni magazine:
In response to a declining journalism job market, the University’s Gallivan Program in Journalism, Ethics and Democracy is taking a new approach to help Notre Dame students nab coveted summer reporting internships: Buy them.
Last fall the Gallivan program reached agreements with The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Concord (New Hampshire) Monitor and the Los Angeles Times to take on Notre Dame summer interns. The program’s endowment will fund the salaries of the news interns at the Inquirer and the Monitor, while the Times sports reporting internship will be funded by a private donor.

“Given the financial situation in American journalism today, you see a number of cutbacks, and in particular we see it in the number of paid internships that are available to students,” says Gallivan director Robert Schmuhl ‘70, who holds the Walter H. Annenberg-Edmund P. Joyce chair in American studies and journalism.

The Pilot has always placed a premium on summer internships. A number of our folks began their service to our readers as interns. Heck, Denis Finley started here a couple decades ago as an intern in the Pilot’s photo department while he pursued a master’s degree from the University of Missouri. Just look at him now: He’s the editor.
I’ve had particularly good luck with interns in my graphics department, here at the Pilot. Rachel Matthews, Xinning Huang, Lindi Daywalt, Ji Qi and, now, Allisence Chang. Those are my interns. But it reads more like an all-star lineup.
And my replacement as graphics editor in my last job, Jeff Bash, started out as my 1999 summer intern at The Des Moines Register.
Interns. Ya gotta love ‘em.
So, how are your interns doing this summer? Let us know.
