Roanoke AME/Presentation promoted to Managing Editor

Michael Stowe, the Assistant Managing Editor for Presentation at The Roanoke Times, was named that paper’s managing editor Tuesday.

I met Michael seven years ago when he was chief of the paper’s New River Valley bureau. He and I and a dozen-and-a-half others attended a huge Poynter leadership seminar led by Edward Miller. A few years later, Michael was promoted to sports editor and then to AME/Presentation. Some of you may have met him last fall in Orlando — he told me that was the first SND he had attended.

His crew did superb work this spring following the shootings at Virginia Tech. Just superb. Steve Cavendish of the SND/Update blog interviewed Michael about the Times’ Tech coverage:

In a previous era, this might have been the time for a special afternoon edition of the morning-produced Times. But Stowe said they started publishing everything they could on Roanoke.com.

“We’re in a world now where you don’t even think about the next day’s paper. You just start putting things online,” he said. “We had a map of the campus up by 11:15 and added timeline pieces throughout the day.”

Staffers were called in from their days off. As the day unfolded, an eight-page special section was planned which was bumped up to 12 during the evening.

“It was a great team effort,” Stowe said. “The whole place pulled together as newsrooms do. It affected our community in a big way.”

From the Times’ news story today:

Stowe, 37, fills a job formerly held by Carole Tarrant, who succeeded Mike Riley as editor in May.

As managing editor, Stowe will supervise most day-to-day issues in the newsroom and help develop long-term strategy to increase readership.

“Michael draws on a deep knowledge of the region and this newspaper’s role in it,” Tarrant said.

“He also brings energy to looking at our business in new ways. He’ll use his experience in the print newsroom as the foundation for exploring new formats and reaching more readers.”

The Roanoke Times circulates about 94,000 daily and 104,000 Sunday. It’s owned by Landmark Communications, which also owns my own paper, The Virginian-Pilot.

Michael’s a swell guy and a fabulous manager. He’ll do well in this job.

Congratulations, dude!
