Happy birthday, Deb Withey
Let’s pause a moment today to offer the happiest of VizEds birthday wishes to Deborah Withey, the Deputy Managing Editor for Presentation of The Virginian-Pilot and my immediate supervisor. She turns 29 today (Saturday).
Well, not really 29. But that’s about the only way I know how to suck up. So give me a break.

As DME, Deb oversees photo, design, the copy desk, the day desk and my own graphics department. Deb came to The Pilot after spending many years with Knight-Ridder. She’s redesigned more newspapers than most of us have even seen. Her most recent project — a massive re-imagining of The Pilot itself — was completed nearly two months ago. It’s gone well.
She was president of the Society for News Design, back in 1995. When she was, um, 17 years old.
She’s won a lot of awards and she’s judged a lot of contests. See her official bio at the Creative Circle website:

Her husband, Dr. Juan Antonio Giner, is a noted international newspaper consultant. He runs a blog called What’s Next: Innovations in Newspapers. Find that blog here — and don’t forget to bookmark it, too:

Deb and Juan Antonio have a wonderful young son named Tam David. He’s incredibly sharp. To Juan Antonio’s amazement, Tam picked up his dad’s iPhone the other day and taught himself how to use it in no time. Read that blog entry here:

Deborah shares a birthday with NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, actor Billy Bob Thornton, politician Barack Obama and Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. That pretty much covers a lot of ground, don’tcha think?
Happy 29th birthday, Deb! Best wishes!
