Orlando Sentinel lands Tory Hargro

Tory Hargro

Absolutely!

Tory was one of the candidates in The Intern contest at SND/Orlando last summer.

He graduated this spring from Alcorn State University, where he made the Dean’s List six times. In addition. Tory worked as the university’s Director of Development and Marketing. In 1999, Tory worked as an intern in the U.S. Senate.

He earned an fellowship this summer at The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg.

Tory does web-centric consulting work via his company, NextVerge.

UPDATE:

I now have the official announcement out of Orlando:

I’m pleased to announce that Tory Hargro will join the design team as a multimedia artist next month. Tory will report to Design Editor Todd Stewart, building graphics for the paper and interactive elements for the web.

Tory has experience working in a variety of print, broadcast and digital mediums. He comes to the Sentinel off a summer fellowship at Poynter, where he studied innovative uses of technology to spread information. A web designer by trade, he was selected by the Society for News Design as a finalist in “The Intern” competition hosted by the Sentinel last year. Last month he won a MySpace MyEmmy (precursor to the Emmys) for a documentary he produced on his home state of Mississippi: “After Hurricane Katrina.”

After graduating from Alcorn State, Tory interned in the senate majority leader’s office in Washington, D.C. before deciding visual communication was more fun. In addition to his web pursuits, Tory is the founder of the McCormick Tribune Distinguished Journalist Series at Alcorn, a program that connects notable minority journalists to college and high school students.

His first day will be sometime in mid-September.
