Top 10 U.S. newspaper web sites

The Bivings Report today announced its Top 10 list of U.S. newspaper sites.

No real surprises here, I think — at least in the top three. For the record, here they are:

1. New York Times

New York Times web page

Erin Teeling writes:

We love the general feeling of the NYT site, which is pleasing to the eye and easy to navigate. The site is loaded with great features, and, as of August 7, the website dropped its paid-for content, TimesSelect, which is definitely worth bonus points.

2. Washington Post

Washington Post web site

Not only do we like the design and the navigability of the Post’s website, but we really love its database applications, which provide interesting tidbits of information difficult to find elsewhere. The Post’s website has been a huge success, and is one of the best examples of newspapers creating an online product that is significantly different from its print product.

3. USA Today

USA Today web site

Social networking. Social networking. Social networking. Did I mention that this site has the most robust social networking features out of any of the newspaper websites we researched? Oh yeah. And this site has social networking.

4. Houston Chronicle

5. Denver Post

6. Knoxville News Sentinel

7. Fresno Bee

8. Austin American Statesman

9. Nashville Tennessean

10. San Jose Mercury News
