Using Google maps for online halloween decoration stories

Last week, we mentioned how Brian Cragin and his crew at The San Diego Union Tribune were using Google’s MyMaps function to plot the fast-changing fires around San Diego. I thought it was pretty nifty how Brian found a way to use Google’s own engines to benefit his readers. After all, Google’s been using its aggregators to eat our lunch for years, now.

Layne Smith of The Dallas Morning News has taken this idea one step further.

Layne has used Google to attach photos of Halloween decorations submitted by readers to Google maps. And it’s accessible only through The Dallas Morning News web site.

Boo By You page

Boo By You page

As Layne says at the News Artist Organization bulletin board:

Google map + “user-generated content” = happy bosses

We’ve been asking people for their photos for a few days and the response has been awful! We’re hoping that actually seeing the map with some examples on it will help people understand what’s up, and excite them about contributing. There might be an interesting lesson to be learned in that. That lesson might have something to do with motivating people to action. As my wife said when I asked her what she thought, “I got stuff to do.”

Just think what’ll happen when we allow readers to attach their own photos.

Sheer genius, Layne. Sheer genius.

Halloween with the Apples

Call me easily amused. But I’m really enjoying Halloween this year.

We follow the same routine every October. But, for some reason, I decided to shoot our pumpkin preparation this year.

Sharon always takes care of step one — cut out the insides — before I decide on a face.

This year, however, we were blessed with a particularly strange set of shapes. I thought I’d play off the stems to form misshapen noses. We’ve talked about this but we’ve never actually tried it before.

I asked Sharon to hollow out the largest pumpkin from the top down — as usual — but to turn the smaller ones on their sides. She took care of all the sloppy stuff Monday. So as soon as dinner is over Tuesday night, we are ready to begin.

Jack o’ Lantern sketches

I always sketch out a few faces. I try to play to the shape of each pumpkin. To me, a pumpkin looks sad or frightened or playful even before I touch them.

Once I decide how to bring out each pumpkin’s natural face, I take my Pentel pen directly to the pumpkin’s face.

Pumpkins roughed out

I used to carve them myself, but long ago, I found I developed such severe hand cramps that I’d lay whimpering in bed for days afterward.

Not really. But damn, it’d hurt.

Sharon, apparently, has much more hand strength than I do. So she not only carves the pumpkins, but also she does it quickly, cleanly and without snapping knife blades.

Therefore, I design and she carves. That way, there’s much less whimpering.

Sharon carves a pumpkin

I get a little unnerved watching her work. She enjoys using a knife a little too much — if you know what I mean. Sharon and Lorena Bobbit may have a lot in common.

Jab it in the eye

Observe her unbridled glee as she jabs her blade into the pumpkin’s eye. Believe me, you don’t ever want to piss off my wife.

Sharon enjoys stabbing things

Sharon takes a break, from time to time, to roast pumpkin seeds in the oven.

Sharon stirs the seeds

I’m not much of a pumpkin seed nut. But Sharon and Elizabeth love ‘em.

Yummy pumpkin seeds

Even Mr. Spock, our cocker spaniel, loves pumpkin seeds. “Give me some, Mommy…”

Spock wants a snack

Sharon gives Spock a treat, but not before humiliating him by making him dance and beg — much like the Platonians did the real Mr. Spock in episode 67.

Spock begs for pumpkin seeds

You’ll notice the absence of my daughter, Elizabeth. She decides she has to wash her hair, so she spends the entire evening giving the hot water heater a workout.

Or, perhaps she saw the camera come out and smelled a blog entry.

When we’re all done carving and baking the seeds, it’s time to clean up. Here, Sharon checks the prostate of the poor little fellow on the right.

Sharon puts her hand up a pumpkin’s ass

The expressions on the pumpkins are dramatic and amusing — so mission accomplished.

But how will the pumpkins play in the dark? It’s time to light the candles.

Pumpkins in the light

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Pumpkins in the dark

It’s a shame Halloween only comes around once a year.

On the other hand, I’ve not actually tried carving a face in a bunny rabbit. Or a turkey carcass.

I hope your own Halloween will be a fun one. Go give out some candy!

Happy birthday, Jonathon Berlin

Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to Jonathon Berlin of the Chicago Tribune. Jonathon turns 32 today.

Jonathon Berlin

Jonathon at O’Connor’s pub in Boston
a couple weeks ago. This photo — and
all the others, too, come to think of
it — are by Mark Friesen.

Jonathon’s been a member of the World’s Greatest Newspaper for three whole days: He started work on Monday.

Previously, of course, he spent several years as senior editor for design and graphics of The San Jose Mercury News. Before that, Jonathan was assistant design director of The Rocky Mountain News. And before that, he was at the Merc.

Jonathon began his career at the Times of Northwest Indiana. He’s a 1998 graduate of the University of Illinois.

Making the world safe for Saltines

Ninja Jonathon opens a box of Saltine whoop-ass
during a late-Saturday-night event in Boston.
May all munchies be afraid. Be very afraid.

Many of you know Jonathon, however, as the long-suffering editor of SND’s quarterly Design magazine. I say ‘long-suffering’ because in the three years I’ve been contributing a column, I think I’ve made deadline maybe twice. Multiply that by 60 pages over 3 years and you’ll see: That’s a lot of cats Jonathan has been herding.

SND president Scott Goldman gave a special president’s award to Jonathon during the awards banquet in Boston a couple weeks ago:

For his many years of service to the Society and its membership, most recently as the tireless editor of Design magazine. His efforts have elevated the magazine’s impact, while all the while pushing SND to expand its areas of influence in the industry, in the face of overwhelming change.

Matt Mansfield, Jonathon’s former boss at the Merc says this about Jonathon:

Jonathon is truly one of a kind — and I mean that in the best way. JB has a creative spark that makes everyone around him better. He helps people reach in new, exciting directions. He has a breaking news metabolism that’s pretty unmatched in our biz. And he’s completely modest about his considerable talent.

I’m happy to have worked with Jonathon so often and on so many projects, even happier he showed up with a wacky sheep-laden resume the first time I met him way back when in his way back college days. I’m even happier he’s become one of my best friends over all those years.

Happy Birthday, JB! I hope you have the appropriately kooky costume and party planned!

Robb Montgomery — the creator of this very web site — writes:

I shot this Video of JB in February, at the Merc, where he and I were prototyping the redesign of the Business section.

He hired me help him shape the project. And this film was made on a break outside of his office. Apparently the dragonfly flew in the newsroom but by the time we got to try it - the batteries were spent.

I like it when he says “try something different.”

Pensive Jonathon

Friesen catches Jonathon in a pensive mood
during a break in Boston earlier this month.
Jon is probably wondering whether or not
he’ll still be in his probationary period at
the Tribune when the paper lays him off.

Jonathon shares a birthday with Mike Braun of the Fort Myers News-Press, Lord of the Rings trilogy director Peter Jackson, TV news personalities Jane Pauley and Dan Rather, the late John Candy and historical figure Chiang Kai-Shek.

In addition, today is Increase Your Psychic Powers Day. But I’m sure you knew I was going to say that.

Oh — And today is also Halloween. You knew I was going to say that, too.

See? You’ve increased your psychic powers, just by reading this post! Way to go!

Happy birthday, Jonathon! Best wishes for a happy birthday, my friend! And congrats again on the new gig!

Happy birthday, Mike Braun

Happy VizEds birthday wishes go out today to my buddy Mike Braun of the Fort Myers News-Press. Mike turns 53 today.

Mike Braun

Mike spent more than eight years at The Vindicator in Youngstown, Ohio, where he was chief of the design desk.

He suffered greatly during the infamous strike against the Vindicator several years ago. Because he was in management, he didn’t strike. Instead, worked 30 to 40 hours a day. And walked to work and back home again barefoot in the snow. Uphill both ways.

Or something like that. The details escape me now. But you get the idea: The man worked hard.

Then, Mike got lucky. About two-and-a-half years ago, he managed to hook up with The News-Press in Fort Myers. Not only does he do pretty decent work there, he’s even been promoted — he’s now Senior News Designer.

Most of all, however, in sunny Florida, there is no snow in which to walk home. Plus, there are no hills. So Mike’s a happy guy.

Here’s something else I’ll bet you didn’t know about Mike: He’s the identical twin of Apollo 12 commander Charles “Pete” Conrad. The two of them were separated at birth:

Separated at birth?

Mike is the one with the better teeth.

I’d love to post a bushel of samples of Mike’s News-Press work. However, he has posted only three pages in his NewsPageDesigner portfolio. And two of those jpegs appear to have technical problems.

That leaves only one of his old Vindicator pages to post. It’s from 2003, but at least it’s a good one:

In addition, today is Increase Your Psychic Powers Day. And, of course, it’s Halloween!

Best wishes for a happy birthday, Mikey! And post some new pages soon!

Lucie Lacava picked to redesign Sunday Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Dee Dee D’Asaro of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has announced:

Wonderful news!

We are near the end of negotiations, and it looks like Lucie Lacava of Lacava Design Inc. will most likely be helping us redesign the Sunday newspaper.

Lucie Lacava

Lucie is known for her elegant use of typography and architecture. Her portfolio includes over 60 projects, and the largest paper she’s worked on is the Chicago Tribune. She was instrumental in designing/launching the National Post in Canada six years ago amid a highly competitive national market. More recently she redesigned the Baltimore Sun and the Telegraph-Journal, and is finishing up a redesign of La Libre Belgique in Brussels.

She is the originator of the much copied “hot L” concept for teases. I remember being inspired years ago by her use of spot color in her first major redesign: Le Devoir in Montreal. Three of her projects have been voted among the “World’s Best Designed” by the Society of News Design for a grand total of 10 times.

Lucie will be visiting Atlanta next week to finalize details. We are setting up an open meeting for all interested visual folks to meet her, see her presentation and ask questions. I’ll send another note with time/location when we know more. You can check out her website at lacavadesign.ca

The SND Region 3 blogger — The AJC’s Melissa Anglereports Lucie met with the AJC staff today.

More spooky halloween projects

Last week, we showed you a few Halloween projects and asked you to show us yours…

Bonita Burton of The Orlando Sentinel writes:

Here’s one we did in Orlando, the first Flash piece produced by our photo department.

Halloween faces in Orlando

Michael Higdon of the University of Nevada’s Sagebrush posted at NewsPageDesigner:

There ended up being an 1800 word narrative about zombies, so I went with something far more simple than I originally planned. The photo illustration is of three locals with some photoshop action.

Nevada Zombies

Richard Watkins of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution posted:

I had a lot of fun putting this page together! The lead was a story on movie creatures that have scared Movies & More columnist Alan Smithee (the gentleman in the Hannibal Lecter mask). I knew from the start I wanted to use the Frankenstein’s monster face big on the page for impact. The really fun part of putting this together was searching and gathering the photos.

Atlanta Faces of Fear

Jess Spivak of The Beaufort (S.C.) Gazette posted:

Halloween is the time of year for bats and spiders. Bats are fascinating creatures. What can you do if you find one in your home? And how can you prevent them from taking roost in your humble abode? Also, did you know that spiders, specifically tarantulas, can be great pets?

Beaufort Gazette spider page

Great pets, my ass! Nice page, though.

Clay Sisk of the Times Record News of Wichita Falls, Texas, posted:

Here’s the new cover design for our entertainment guide-NEXT. Illustration and design by me.

Times Record News

Very nice, Clay. Find his personal portfolio here.

For a sports fan, there’s no topping the Halloween efforts of The (Raleigh, N.C.) News & Observer’s Grey Blackwell. The man is a genius with the animated short. His latest effort — about all the rumors surrounding retired Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who retired to that area — is a real winner:
