Happy birthday, Laura Ruel

.

Let’s offer up happy VizEds birthday wishes today to Laura Ruel of the University of North Carolina.

Laura is probably best known as the founder and coordinator of the Society for News Design’s New Media awards, the SND.ies. Naturally, you can read more about the SND.ies or search for past winners of SND.ies. You’ll see this year’s winners honored later this week in Boston.

In addition, Laura conducted research for Poynter’s EyeTrac III project. You’ll hear more about that in Boston, too.

Laura has been at UNC since 2004. Previously, she had been the first executive director of The University of Denver’s Estlow Center.

She was a page designer at The Rocky Mountain News from 1998 to 2000 and Presentation Editor of The Omaha World-Herald from 1995-1998. She was graphics editor of the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel from 1987 to 1991.

Find Laura’s personal web site here.

Laura shares a birthday with Miami Herald intern Poh Si Teng, Brandon (Superman Returns) Routh, Tony (Monk) Shalhoub, Scott (Star Trek: Enterprise) Bakula, Sharon (The Osbournes) Osbourne and the late, great John Lennon.

Plus, today is Moldy Cheese Day. Seriously.

Best wishes for a happy birthday, Laura!
