Meeting college journalists in D.C.
I spent an enjoyable morning rubbing elbows with literally thousands of college journalists attending the National College Media Convention at the Washington D.C. Hilton.

It was great seeing all the enthusiasm the students have. They’re all so eager to meet news professionals, to talk newspapers and careers and to chat. There’s no pessimism about our business in those young faces.
I taught two sessions today. One was on covering the big story. The other asked students to consider different techniques of rendering visuals but suggested they worry more about telling a compelling story rather than which drawing or 3D application they use.
Between sessions, I sat down with my old pal Mark Witherspoon and his crew from the Iowa State Daily newspaper. Man, that paper has come a long, long way in the four years since I left Iowa. Very nice. Very newsy.

The staff of the Iowa State Daily indulges a rambling old man.

I also got to see my old friend Ron Johnson from Kansas State and the wonderfully talented Stephen Komives of The Orlando Sentinel.
In fact, Stephen used my laptop to give his own session. As a result, I have his powerpoint presentation on my hard drive. Bwah-ha-ha-ha…
I spotted the Arizona Republic’s Tracy Collins lining up kids his job fair table. I wanted to drop by and say hello but he looked swamped.
In all, it was a swell way to spend a rainy Saturday morning.

Just noticed this entry, from a while ago. I enjoyed your sessions (I went to both) and really got the whole “content, content, content” thing down…in my mind. Getting it down on paper is the challenge, but definitely the right thing. So thanks for the CCC. :)
