Starting my trip to Boston a little early
.
A DETOUR THROUGH ATLANTA
I had originally planned to fly out to Boston on Wednesday.
However, a couple of weeks ago, my friends at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution asked me to teach a couple of sessions today (Tuesday) and Wednesday. Luckily, I had bought my airline tickets from Delta. Delta has been rumored to fly through Atlanta, occasionally.
So I got here this morning, I’ll present this afternoon and I’ll meet with the graphics department this evening for an informal roundtable. I then teach my main session again Wednesday to another shift of folks before dashing off to the airport for a leisurely ride to Boston.
With any luck, I’ll be there by dinnertime Wednesday night.

A NICE VIEW

The view from my room. That’s Centennial
Olympic Park in the foreground. The round
skyscraper beyond is Peachtree Center.

The folks from the AJC and the Southeastern Newspaper Publishers Association are putting me up tonight in the Omni/CNN Center. I’ve been in the building many, many times but I’ve never stayed here. Personally, I’m hoping to run into Robin Meade while I’m here.

ONE IS WORTH ROUGHLY ONE DOLLAR
The most amusing thing that happened on my trip: I arrived in Atlanta and elected to take the MARTA train downtown to my hotel. I put a five dollar bill in the machine and expected a fare card.
The machine spit out a card… but also a token. Which I examined with a puzzled expression. What the hell?
So one of the very nice MARTA employees came over to offer assistance. I guess I’m lucky they’re so polite. What I was puzzling over wasn’t a rail token at all; it was a Sacagawea dollar coin. It was my change.
Chuck, you fool!

Well, hell. It’s been so long since I’ve seen one…

EARLY ARRIVALS IN BOSTON
Meanwhile, not only are the interns and the SND blog crowd already in Boston, the Sun-Sentinel’s Paul Wallen tells me he’s in New England already, enjoying a brief driving tour before the workshop. Robb Montgomery also went a couple days ago. He’s escorting a group of Egyptian journalists on a newsroom tour, I understand.
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again.
The folks over at the SND blog are saying it’s cold there. I didn’t even pack a long-sleeved shirt. On the other hand, I’m a fat guy. Fat guys are always hot-natured. And remember, I spent eight years in Chicago and Iowa. So I’m betting I’ll be fine.

A PEEK AT THE FLOOR PLAN
And, finally, workshop chairman Dan Zedek sends this newly updated floor plan of the meeting venue. As usual, click on the thumbnail for a larger view:
Thanks, Dan!

Funny thing is that most of those meeting rooms are also the names of common fonts…Berkeley, Clarendon etc. So I guess when SND meets in Switzerland we will see some nice sans serif meeting rooms??

Dennis, is that why the Park Plaza offered me the Hobo suite?
