Yep, I’m speaking again — this time in D.C.

Since no one physically stuffed a sock in my mouth in Atlanta or in Boston last week, I’m continuing to blather on.

I’m making two appearances next Saturday morning (Oct. 27) at the Associated College Press/College Media Advisors’ 86th Annual National College Media Convention.

The plush Washington Hilton

The plush Washington Hilton. Too rich for my
blood, especially after paying my own way to
Boston. You’ll find me sleeping in a van, down
by the river.

OK, time for a quick trivia question. What
famous event occured at the Washington
Hilton on March 30, 1981?

Hint:

Reagan assassination attempt

My two sessions are:

9-9:50 a.m. COVERING THE BIG STORY
When news breaks, it’s vital that a graphics/design operation get in front of the story and stay there. While photos and narrative are important, there are often large aspects of a breaking-news story that can only be told effectively by other visuals. What you need to know to become prepared for breaking news and how to capitalize on it.

11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. RENDERING THE TRUTH
3-D is all the rage. Everyone seems to be scrambling to learn LightWave and Maya. But are these applications really worth the expense and the learning curve it takes to master them? Maybe, maybe not. We’ll look at fabulous work done in 3D applications, vector programs and wonderful stuff drawn my hand and then scanned into Photoshop. What we’ll learn, of course, is that the medium isn’t nearly as important as the story we’re telling.

Memo to the joker who typed the speaker listings in the official program: It’s Virginian-Pilot. Not Virginia-Pilot. Sigh.

We’re also trying to find a time during which I can meet with my old friend Mark Witherspoon and the staff he advises, The Iowa State Daily. My hope is that I won’t be looking at their work at 3:30 in the morning.

Also, I discovered today that my incredibly talented summer intern, Michigan State’s Allisence Chang, will be at the convention. I hereby pledge not to embarrass her if I see her, the way I embarrassed her last week in Boston.

…OK, I’m lying. So sue me.
