Happy birthday, Bill Gaspard

Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays today to Bill Gaspard, DME/Visuals of The Las Vegas Sun. Bill turns 51 today.

Bill and his wife, Nelly, gave birth to a son last month.

Well, now that you mention it, Nelly probably did most of the ‘giving birth’ part. But I’m sure Bill supervised. Or, at least, art directed. Or something.

Anyway, Benjamin Sunhong Min Gaspard was born Oct. 18, the week after the Boston workshop.

Bill spent 12 years at The San Diego Union-Tribune and then another four years at The Los Angeles Times before moving on to Vegas in 2005. Bill was president of the Society for News Design in 2005 and will be the site chair for the 2008 workshop in Vegas.

Bill’s buddy — Matt Mansfield, AME of The San Jose Mercury News, writes:

What can I say about Bill Gaspard? Nothing that Charles would feel comfortable putting in a family blog!

OK, maybe one or two things … Bill defines the essence of professionalism. I’ve never seen him be anything but generous with his time, his talent and his knowledge of our industry.

And Bill’s also a great leader of the party. And, boy, he’s bound to be throwing a good one next year in Vegas (shameless plug: www.sndvegas.com)!

See you at the Ranch tonight for steak and ale to celebrate!

We’re having difficulty identifying Bill’s work online. Hey, Bill, when you get some time, post more pages, willya?

Bill models a Chicago Tribune sweatshirt in the
bar in Syracuse, February 2007. I don’t know
about this particular shirt, but I’ve heard that
most of the Tribune apparel sent to the west coast
actually had “kick me” printed on the back.
Could just be a rumor I started, though. Photo

Bill shares a birthday with Jonathan Kleinow of The Kansas City Star, Actors Sam Waterston and Ed Asner, artist Georgia O’Keeffe, Judge Joseph Wapner, the original star of The People’s Court, and recording artists Petula Clark and Bill Fries, better known as “C.W. McCall,” the guy who recorded that C.B. radio song way back in 1975 or so.

Greatest HITS? Plural?
You must be joking…

Plus, today is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. Seriously.

Best wishes, my friend, for the happiest of birthdays!
