Internships, continued…
First of all, if you’ve not read our guide to internships, then please drop everything and read it now. Especially if you’re a) Looking for an internship for next spring or summer, or b) Looking to hire an intern for next spring or summer.
Several folks told me they’d get back to me with internship possibilities at their papers. I’ve not heard back from many of them. As the info trickles in, I’ll post it here.
Meanwhile, here’s what’s new…

Dennis Brack, Deputy Art Director of The Washington Post says his paper’s internship deadline has already passed. But they are looking to make a full-time hire.
…Our internship deadline was Nov. 1. We offer one position (and sometimes two, if there are really strong candidates) on both our News Art and News Desk staffs, in addition to lots of others in various reporting and copy desks, as well as the Editorial staff. (Find more information here.)
The News Desk internships are aimed at page designers interested in news (A section, Metro) and Sports pages. In News Art, we’ve had interns who have specialized in info graphics, cartography and art direction/design, or a combination of those areas.
Historically, a large number of Post interns end up staying at the paper. Len Downie, the current executive editor, and Bob Kaiser, a former managing editor, were in the first intern class of 1962. Ron Reason and Neil Chase are former TWP copy editing interns. And me.
Thanks for getting all that on the record, Dennis. Meanwhile, Dennis points out that the Post is looking to hire for one full-time position:
We are looking for a features design director, a leader/coach for art directors who work on our Book World, Food, Health, Home, Sunday Source and Real Estate sections.
No ad online yet, but interested/qualified people can email me: brackd [at] washpost.com.

Steve Cavendish, graphics editor of the Chicago Tribune, posted this Thursday in the forums at VizEds:
The Chicago Tribune is seeking summer interns in the graphics department.
Our internship program seeks college juniors, seniors and graduate students who have at least one previous internship on a daily newspaper other than college. We set the same high performance standards for interns as we do for our regular staff members. This is not a teaching program. Tribune interns must be able to - and often do - cover major stories their first few days on the job.
The salary is $567 a week for 12 weeks. A cover letter, resume, electronic portfolio (PDFs, jpegs and/or swfs, burned onto a disc), and the names of at least two professional and one school reference should be sent to:Sheila Solomon
Senior Editor for Recruitment
Chicago Tribune
435 N. Michigan Avenue
Chicago, IL 60611Material must be received by: November 30 for summer.
If you’re interested and you’d like to know more about it, email me at scavendish ( at ) tribune (dot) com.

Speaking of the Trib, Redeye’s Chris Courtney e-mailed Sunday:
Our internship program is setup to work in a season cycle with the application deadlines listed below…
Aug. 1 for fall
Nov. 30 for winter
Jan. 1 for spring
March 1 for summer.Currently, our roster is completely full for the moment, but you never know what the spring or summer may being.
As stated on our website, internships may be filled before the deadline if we have the right candidate come forward. How many spots do we have? Generally 2 reporters, 1 copy editor and 1 designer, but that can vary.
The key thing I want to add is that our internships are unpaid. Not my rules, but that needs to be said for the designer wanting to work in Chicago for the summer.
Not surprisingly, most of our interns are from Northwestern and the Art Institute. But North Carolina, University of Ohio and others have had students on our roster before, so it really depends on what the intern is looking for.
I can say that on the design side, our interns are doing everything and getting one-on-one mentoring as if they were a fulltime member of the staff. Translation: Tons of clips (covers included), web work and opportunity to grow.
Bonus, if you like to write as well, we’ve been known to split our internships to help build up portfolios with writing and design sections (4-6 weeks of each).
On the hiring side…
I am in a mode of perpetual recruitment. We just expanded our circulation again (200,000, now) and there is always buzz about the potential for other opportunities soon. Bottom line, if someone wants to be a member of Team RedEye they need to sound the horn and make themselves known. There’s tons of talent out there and I won’t pretend to have the scoop on all of it. E-mail a link of your port and let me know your interested in what we do.

Rick Epps, News Design Director of The Detroit News, wrote Sunday evening:
We haven’t finalized whether or not we will have a design intern next summer. Some budget issues for next year still need to be resolved. But I am optimistic we will have one.
The recruiting has gone very well. I have spoken in depth with several very promising candidates. It is exciting to see such a deep pool of talent out there. It speaks to a bright future for visual journalism.
We are looking for energetic students who are interested in working hard, jumping right into the action, and trying their hand at design of several sections, and graphics. We don’t have our interns sit on the sidelines and hold the clipboard. They take snaps every day, in the process getting a wealth of experience, and have a lot of fun doing it.
I will get back to you with the exact deadline, but applicants should do so soon. They can go here for details on how to apply.

My final item today is rather remarkable. Colin Bridge, design director of The Daily Lobo, writes:
Hey Charles,
I just read the internship blog post and thought that maybe I could lend a helping hand.
Attached is a list that my editor in chief and I have been compiling for the last few weeks, listing a good chunk of Internship deadlines and contact information, from all of the different data bases out there and personal research.
Not the prettiest-looking list, but it’s something.
Oh, it is indeed something, Colin! Thanks to you and your Loboesque friends there in Albuquerque!
Here’s what Colin sent:
