Baltimore Sun copy desk chief loses children in house fire

Sad news this weekend from Baltimore.

Baltimore Sun copy desk chief Stephen Young and his wife lost their children — an 11-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old son — when their house in suburban Roland park burned early Thursday.Stephen reportedly suffered smoke inhalation and broke his hip when he leaped from the house.

A story in Friday’s Sun reported:

Their father… was found outside the front door. Choking, he managed to tell firefighters that his children were trapped inside, a city Fire Department spokesman said.

Young was rushed to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was in critical condition and stable last night, recovering from a broken hip and suffering from smoke inhalation.

His wife, Nancy, an attorney with the Maryland attorney general’s office, escaped the fire, which broke out shortly after 4 a.m. on Ridgewood Road, by scrambling out a third-floor window onto a porch roof, where firefighters pulled her to safety. She was not injured.

Abigail, a sixth-grader, died at the hospital Thursday. Matthew, a 10th-grader, died early Saturday from his injuries, the Sun reported.

Two more daughters — one a teacher in New York and the other a freshman at William & Mary — were not home.

Best wishes go out to Steve and Nancy and all of our friends in Baltimore who are dealing with this tragedy.
