Here’s a little Christmas treat for you: famous Hollywood voiceover actors reading “T’was the Night Before Christmas”:

From YouTube, obviously. I found it at Mark Evanier’s blog.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Page 1 photos lead to an easy arrest in Idaho

Monday, December 24th, 2007

This is the front page of the Lewiston Tribune of Idaho– not to be confused with the Lewiston, Maine, Sun Journal — for Thursday, Dec. 14:

Lewiston, Idaho, front page from Dec. 14

See anything unusual about those two photos? Anything at all?

Here’s the AP report of what happened:

The [photo lower on the page] was taken from [a convenience] store’s surveillance video, which reportedly shows the man slipping the wallet in his coat pocket and walking away. The picture of the possible purloiner ran along with a story explaining that a woman had forgotten her wallet at the store, and that police were now trying to identify the man in the video.

Also on the front page ran a festive photo of a holiday scene taken by the newspaper’s photographer, Kyle Mills. That photo showed a man — in a blue and black coat — painting decorative Christmas greetings on storefront windows. The caption identified the man as Michael Millhouse of Millhouse Signs in Lewiston.

Some sharp-eyed copy editors at the newspaper first noticed the matching photos as they were laying out the newspaper Wednesday night and wondered if they showed the same man, managing editor Paul Emerson said Thursday.

“They were pointing it out and laughing about it,” Emerson said.

A newspaper employee called the nearby Clarkston, Wash., police department early the next morning to report their suspicions.

Police Chief Joel Hastings said that after picking up a copy of the paper, Officer Jeremy Maguire contacted Millhouse and asked about the wallet. Millhouse was subsequently arrested and charged with felony second-degree theft. He is scheduled for a hearing on Monday, Asotin County Prosecuting Attorney Ben Nichols said, and he was released from custody after posting $5,000 bond.

Is there a Pulitzer category for a photo directly leading to an arrest? Or, at least, an SND category?

The Lewiston Tribune circulates about 27,000 daily. For a higher-rez look at that page, click on this thumbnail:

Happy birthday, Eric Palm

Friday, December 21st, 2007

Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds Birthdays to Eric Palm, a designer at the Orlando Sentinel. Eric turns 34 today.

Eric Palm

Eric has been in Orlando about a year-and-a-half. Previously, he edited and designed pages for The New York Times, the Sarasota, Fla. Herald Tribune, the Ocala (Fla.) Star Banner and The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C.

Eric is a 1996 graduate of Auburn University. He and his wife, Anika Myers Palm, live in Orlando.

Orlando’s Stephen Komives contributes this little gem:

Here are 8 things you might not know about Eric:

- He worked security at a New Kids on the Block concert.

- He was a self-described nerd who went to Space Camp.

- There’s one degree of separation between him and Kevin Bacon.

- He’s never driven faster than 115 mph (but he did hit 114 once, in a Saturn!).

- He went skydiving once, but came down with the plane.

- His mother went to college with his wife’s mother and father.

- Worst of all: he once ate at McDonald’s for two weeks straight!

Find Eric’s personal portfolio here or read his blog here.

Eric hares a birthday with a slew of actors: Kiefer Sutherland, Andy Dick, Ray Romano, Samuel L. Jackson and Jane Fonda and two late, great musicians: Frank Zappa and Carl Wilson.

Plus, today is — take a deep breath — National Look at the Bright Side Day, National Flashlight Day, National French Fried Shrimp Day and National Hamburger Day. Seriously.

Best wishes, Eric, for a happy birthday!

Happy birthday, Nina Mehta

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to Nina Mehta, who graduated a few days ago from Indiana University. Nina turns 22 today.

Nina makes a face

Nina, last month in Chicago, from her Flickr feed.

For someone who just graduated, Nina has a very impressive resumé. Hell, her resumé would be impressive if she had graduated five years ago.

She has interned at The Indianapolis Star, Epolitix in London and at Amnesty International. At the Star, Nina was a Pullium fellow. She worked on both the Indiana student newspaper — The Daily Student — and Inside Magazine, playing a lead role in creating the web desks for each of those publications.

And, of course, she was a very-high-profile member of the initial “The Intern” finalist group in Orlando in 2006. Since then, she has been active at VizEds as a member and a podcaster. It seemed like she was everywhere in Boston back in October.

Fellow Orlando “The Intern” contestant William Couch says:

It was a lot of fun working with Nina during the Intern competition – and she didn’t stop there; a semester designing in London, a summer at the Indianapolis Star, playing podcast-poster child for VizEds with that taser audio recorder…

But seriously, she’s one of the most gregarious and tenacious individuals I’ve met, and that kind of ambition is going to carry her places. Happy Birthday, Nina!

No, that’s neither a taser nor a bug zapper.
That’s the VizEds digital podcast recorder.
Thingy. Machine. Whatchamadoodle. Hell,
I don’t even know what it is, but Nina
learned how to use it in about a nano-
second at SND/Boston. Photo by William
Couch.

Billy Kulpa — another Orlando “Intern” contestant — says:

I love Nina - she’s one of the most intelligent (and ambitious) people
I’ve ever met. I’m looking forward to stalking her NewsPageDesigner
portfolio now that she’s graduated.

VizEds creator Robb Montgomery says:

I love working with Nina, She’s smart, hard-working and fearless. Of course, she’s a Hoosier (my dad’s alma mater!) and that goes a long way in my book.

But mostly I love that she is as curious as me about other landscapes, cultures, working abroad, mastering electronic media, refining visual communication, and discovering new people.

That’s where she shines - she is so good with people. And, if you’re going to be a journalist of any merit - you had better have great people skills first.

Nina shares a birthday with Jon Fisch of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, teen singer JoJo and Peter Criss of Kiss — he’s the drummer; the one with the cat makeup.

Plus, today is National Games Day. Whatever that means.

Best wishes, Nina! Happy birthday to you!

Happy birthday, Jon Fisch

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Let’s take a moment to wish the happiest of VizEds birthdays to Jon Fisch, ace sports designer for The Seattle Times. Jon turns 31 today.

Fisch in action

of the 2006 World Series. The Cardinals were
allegedly involved in the series that year. Photo
from Bob Rose’s Facebook gallery.

On his Facebook page, Jon describes his job like this

I watch sports on TV all day and then tell people what I saw.

I like that description. A lot.

A 2000 graduate of the University of North Dakota, Jon spent four years as the sports copy chief for The Grand Forks Herald before moving to The Charlotte Observer and the The State in Columbia, S.C. Jon spent four years at The St. Louis Post-Dispatch before heading west to Seattle this past summer.

When prompted for a quote about Fisch, the Post-Dispatch’s John Telford said:

Jon Fisch? Who’s Jon Fisch?

Upon reflection, John offered:

Well, there’s certainly been a lot of changes in the newsroom at the Post-Dispatch over the last year. A lot of people have moved on in their careers or just life in general, by either taking new jobs or daring to do something else entirely by taking the buyout. There’s a lot of great journalists who’ve walked these halls, and there are some big shoes to fill, but certainly the biggest hole that’s been left behind is the one left by Jon Fisch and his ego.

Reagan Branham adds this about Jon:

You can say how dedicated he is to his former coworkers. He recently flew back to St. Louis for a couple of days for the Post-Dispatch Christmas party. Now that’s dedication!

Erica Smith — also of the Post-Dispatch — didn’t have a quote for us. But she did offer this up from a Post-Dispatch-oriented Facebook page:

Bob Rose and Jon Fisch

Hey, it’s always nice when the boss
shows a little love. That’s Post-
Dispatch AME/Presentation Bob
Rose, whose birthday I completely
missed on the 15th, dammit. Oh,
well, there’s always next year.

A few samples of Jon’s work:

Find more in his NewsPageDesigner portfolio.

On his Facebook page, Jon says he’s a fan of Ludacris, Outkast and the Barenaked Ladies. That’s why I find it amusing he shares a birthday with teen singer JoJo and Peter Criss of Kiss.

Jon also shares a birthday with the ultracool Nina Mehta of Indiana University.

In addition, today is National Games Day. Read into that what you will.

Best wishes for a happy birthday, Jon!
