Happy birthday, Julie Elman
Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to Julie Elman, a professor at Ohio University.

Julie walks across the street to Boston’s
Public Garden to call her mom during
SND/Boston in October.

Just think of all the money SND has saved in printing Awards of Excellence since Julie left daily newspapering to teach. Yet, The Pilot’s loss is a big gain for the students in Athens, Ohio. Julie is a wonderful teacher and she has so very much to pass along.
Julie was — and is — incredibly inventive, fun to work with and she can make a page sing with enormously powerful visuals. And what’s more, she can do this even when neither the visuals nor the stories she’s given aren’t so powerful.
Julie came to The Pilot in 1994, working as a night photo editor and then as a designer. She taught at the University of Missouri for a year before returning to The Pilot. She moved to Ohio in 2005.For my money, Julie is nothing less than the finest A1 designer in the business.

Julie shares a birthday with musicians Warren Zevon and Neil Diamond, gymnast Mary Lou Retton and actors John Belushi, Sharon Tate, Nastassia Kinski and Mischa Barton of “The O.C.”
Plus, today is Eskimo Pie Patent Day. Seriously.
Best wishes, Julie, for a happy birthday!
