A chance to be bored in person by Charles Apple
He speaks. He teaches. He tells amusing stories.
Ahem. He tells stories. No guarantees made on the amusing part.
He shows slides and give graphics and design tips. He talks about himself in the third person.
Yep. That’s me, Charles Apple. And I’ll be speaking at the North Carolina Press Association Winter Institute in Cary, N.C., next week. So if you’ve not yet had a chance this year to sleep during a presentation, this could be be your big opportunity.

The Embassy Suites in Cary.
— The date will be Thursday, Feb. 28. I’m on from 9 a.m. until noon at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Cary, not far from RDU airport. I’m told there is no charge for the session, but your paper has to be a member of the NCPA, I believe. You can contact the folks there for more information.
My session is part of the Traveling Campus from the fine folks at the Southeastern Newspaper Publishers Association and is similar to “The Art of Being Brilliant” session I taught in Atlanta last October, just before SND/Boston.

I created ‘The Art of Being Brilliant’ for the SNPA
October workshop in Atlanta, presented it twice
there and then once more in Austin in December.

The outline for this presentation:
THE ART OF BEING BRILLIANT
Year after year, decade after decade, we put out the same old stories; the same old papers. No wonder readers are getting tired of us. How can we give a new look to our product; provide a fresh angle for our stories and our pages?
By opening up our minds to new ideas and by using the resources at our fingertips. You may find that the biggest barriers to reaching that next level are in your own head.
Charles Apple of The Virginian-Pilot will show us how to put a fresh spin — or a whole new approach — to not just visuals, but also stories, projects and management in general.
Other sessions being offered in Cary:
* The ‘Golly, Martha, Would You Look at That’ Guide to Journalism by Kenneth Boone, Chairman of Tallapoosa Publishers in Alexander City, Ala. This is an all-day session on Thursday, Feb. 28.
* The $120 Million Question: How Sharp is Your Content Radar? by Thad Ogburn, features editor of The News & Observer, Raleigh, N.C. By old friend Thad will be speaking at the same time as I: 9 a.m.
* Writing 101: The Craft of Writing by Jerry Bellune, Lexington S.C. Jerry, by the way, is a former president of the Society for News Design. He’ll speak from 3 to 5 p.m.
* Doing Interactive, which will apparently be a panel-type discussion on multimedia solutions.
Two sessions will be offered the next morning, Friday, Feb. 19:
* Online Disaster Management by Tim O’Briant, News director of The Aiken Standard, Aiken, S.C.
* Managing with Fewer Resources by Jerry Bellune.
Find more info about the workshops offered next Thursday in Cary.
Later that day, I’ll drop by the offices at my former paper, The News & Observer, to teach a session as part of The N&O’s staff development day.
And in May, I’ll be appearing in the northeast. More about that when the event is officially announced.
I’ll see you there!

I do hope you’ll pass along my warmest regards to old friend jerry Bellune, a brilliant newspaper person. Last I had heard, he was still having the time of his life as a weekly newspaper editor in Lexington, S.C., and writing the occasional freelance piece for Sandlapper magazine (to which I subscribe). Ask him to get in touch!

Thanks for the mention but in regard to:
* Writing 101: The Craft of Writing by Jerry Bellune, Lexington S.C. Jerry, by the way, is a former president of the Society for News Design. He’ll speak from 3 to 5 p.m.
Just for the record, I am not a past president of SND but edited Design, the society’s magazine, for three years.
