Giants-Pats is also the Battle of the Trademarks
Perhaps it’s a good thing the Super Bowl will be over in 11 hours or so. Seems like this year has produced stranger stories than in years past.
Editor & Publisher’s Joe Strupp reported a few minutes ago:
When the New York Post found out that the New England Patriots were so confident in ending their season with a perfect 19-0 record that the team sought to formally trademark “19-0†as a phrase, the newspaper shot back with its own trademark effort.
The Post, one of the hometown dailies for the Patriots’ opponent in today’s Super Bowl, the New York Giants, reports it applied to trademark the phrase, “18-1.â€
“The Post, ever confident that Eli Manning and company will squash the Pats on Sunday, spent $375 for its own trademark application yesterday - on ‘18-1,’†the paper reported Saturday. “Our application, No. 77385477, is pending.â€
What really set off the Post? When they discovered the Pats had put in their application three days before the AFC championship game with the Chargers.
And it turns out that a Colorado man already owns the trademark anyway, the Post also reported. He bought it back in ‘98 when it looked like the Broncos might go all the way.
But they didn’t. They were beaten in Game 14 that year by — wait for it — the Giants.
Previously, we posted about books planned commemorating each team’s victory tonight. Check it out here.Â
Oh, and tonight? Pats 24, Giants 17. You heard it here first.
