Derek has been at the LAT not quite a year. He spent nine years as the assistant design director of The Star Tribune in Minneapolis. Before that, he spent two years as a designer at The Wichita Eagle in Kansas.
Derek is a 1996 graduate of Kansas State University.

Derek shares a birthday with actors Ashton Kutchner and Chris Rock, musician Garth Brooks and writers Charles Dickens and Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Plus, not surprisingly today is Charles Dickens Day. Oddly enough, however, today is not Ashton Kutchner Day.
Best wishes for a happy birthday, Derek!

I love Derek like a brother. And I have heard from reliable sources that Derek typically has crappy birthdays. I hope that’s not the case this time around. D-Rock, I hope ya had a great one.
