Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays today to a fellow South Carolinian: Ron Brackett, News Art Director of The St. Petersburg Times.

Ron graduated in 1985 with a degree in journalism from the University of South Carolina — the only college in the world at which the sports mascot is named for an illegal sport.

He started his career with The Greenville News, not far from Inman, S.C., where he grew up. After a couple of years, Ron moved to St. Pete, where he’s worked in a number of positions, including Executive News Editor. Ron has worked at the Times, now, nearly 22 years.

Ron shares a birthday with Jen Frost of Atomic Kitten, actors Drew Barrymore and Jeri Ryan, tennis player Michael Chang, basketball great Julius “Dr. J” Erving, the late animal show host Steve Irwin and the man on the $1 bill, George Washington.

In addition, today is Be Humble Day. Seriously.
