Ouch!

According to the BBC last weekend, this picture by Chris Detrick of The Salt Lake Tribune won ‘only’ third place in the Sports Action Stories category in the 2008 World Press Photo competition:

Here’s the original caption:

Provo, Utah — 12/15/07 — Pepperdine’s Jason Walberg, #12, gouges the eyes of Brigham Young University’s Jonathan Tavernari, #45, during the first half of the game. No foul was called on the play. Although Tavernari missed the basket immediately following the eye gouge, he was not injured. Later in the game, he scored back-to-back three pointers, helping BYU win the game 86-67. Tavernari finished the game with 10 points.

So what in the world would beat out a photo like this?

Wait. Don’t answer that. I probably don’t want to know.
