NYT profiles Mad magazine fold-in guy Al Jaffee

In case you missed it, The New York Times ran an interesting piece about Al Jaffee, the artist who creates — among other things — those Fold-in features that have appeared on the back page of Mad magazine over the past 44 years.

The TimesNeil Genzlinger writes:

Mad is, incongruously, a publication that seems to cultivate longevity, as evident from artists like Mort Drucker (first appearance, 1957) and Sergio Aragonés (1963). No current contributor, though, goes back further than Mr. Jaffee. And while other Mad features, like Spy vs. Spy, have changed artists over the years, only Mr. Jaffee has drawn the fold-in. Since the first appeared in April 1964 all but a handful of specialty issues of the magazine have had one.

“A number of months ago I counted, and I came up with something like 396,” Mr. Jaffee said. “I must have done No. 400 by now.”

He started work on No. 4-whatever, for the issue that goes on sale in mid-May, as he has all the others: with a rough pencil sketch. This one shows an altar scene invoking the Raiders of the Lost Ark movies. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is due out soon, and the fold-in question is, “What frightening ancient relic will be the focus of much attention and fanfare this summer?” The folded-in answer, of course, has nothing to do with Indiana Jones.

It’s a wonderful profile, covering how Jaffee started work for Mad, step-by-step how he creates his Fold-In features and delving into his recent bout with colon cancer.

Perhaps the most interesting part is a portfolio of 23 Fold-Ins in which you have to click and drag the page in order to see the hidden picture.

Make sure you check it out in the Sunday Times.

Happy birthday, Jeff Bash

Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to my good friend Jeff Bash, art director of The Des Moines Register. Jeff turns 31 today.

Apple, Bash and Marturello
Left to right: Yours truly; my assistant,
Jeff Bash; and our good friend,
illustrator/designer Mark Marturello.
October, 2003.

Jeff is an amazing guy. He was my summer intern in 1999, during my first summer at graphics director of The Des Moines Register. A very quiet guy, Jeff preferred to do his talking with his graphics work. He decided right away he wanted one of the open positions we had on our news graphics staff. When summer ended, he stayed with us, part-time, to help make ends meet. By November, we knew we wanted to lock him in to a full-time position once he graduated.

Not only he work his way into a job, but he also brought to our attention the incredibly talented Katie VanDalsem. We ended up hiring her, too. The two of them did a lot of great work for us over the years in Iowa.

A year or so later, I decided to begin grooming Jeff to become my eventual successor in the job. My editors thought I was nuts. Hell, Jeff thought I was nuts. The guy was way too young for something like that.

But he learned fast. And, sure enough, when I left for Virginia in 2003, The Register promoted him to art director. Jeff has done very well in the five years since, and my old department ha flourished under his watch.

I’m extremely proud of the guy.

Jeff shares a birthday with hockey greats Gordie Howe and Pavel Bure, and actors Ewan McGregor (’Obi-Wan’ from the Star Wars prequels), Gabe Kaplan (the star of Welcome Back, Kotter), Shirley Jones (Mom of The Partridge Family), and Christopher Walken (from a huge number of weird roles).

In addition, today is the birthday of Al Gore, the creator of the internet.

Plus, today is Bunsen Burner Day and National Clams On The Half Shell Day. Seriously.

Best wishes, Jeff, my friend, for a happy birthday!

Ryan shares a birthday with sports stars Jennifer Capriati and Cy Young, supermodel Elle MacPherson, actor Lucy Lawless — you’ll remember her as Xena, but she’s currently appearing in Battlestar Galactica — former British Prime Minister John Major and Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton.

Plus, today is the Festival of Smoke and Mirrors. Seriously. Danged if I know what that means, though.

Best wishes, Ryan, for a happy birthday!

Sarasota Herald-Tribune hires Travis Ricks

The 2007 College Designer of the Year has found a home. And it’s in sunny Sarasota.

Maggie Lillis via Travis’ Facebook account.

Danny DeJarnette, news design director of the Herald-Tribune, writes:

I’m grateful for all the publishers out there who couldn’t or wouldn’t make room on their payrolls for Travis Ricks, giving Sarasota the opportunity to land one of the most promising young designers around. Having fulfilled an extended internship, and then a full-time but temporary position in Fort Lauderdale, Travis is now heading across the state of Florida, giving up the Atlantic Ocean for the Gulf of Mexico and becoming neighbors with the likes of Maria Sharapova, Dick Vitale and Stephen King. Well, sort of. I mean, at least they all own houses here!

Travis begins his new job Monday, April 7.

Travis graduated in May from Michigan State University with a degree in — now, get this — music performance.

Heh. I dare you guys to challenge him to karaoke at the next SND workshop!

Travis worked at The State News and was named College Designer of the Year in the daily division. He served an internship last fall at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and then was brought back this spring as a temp.

Happy birthday, Chris Kozlowski

Let’s pause a moment to offer the happiest of VizEds birthday wishes to Christopher Kozlowski, design director for news and sports at The St. Petersburg Times. Koz turns 46 today.

his Facebook profile.

Koz has been in St. Pete for a little over two years. His professional resume reads a bit like that Johnny Cash song, “I’ve Been Everywhere.”

A 1986 graduate of Eastern Michigan University, Koz worked at year as a reporter for The Northville Record and Novi News in Michigan before landing a job as a designer at the Ft. Wayne, Indiana, News-Sentinel. Three years later, he became Design Editor of The Lansing State Journal and then Design Editor of The North Hills News Record in Warrendale, Pa.

In 1993, Koz was named Graphics Editor of The Detroit News and was promoted to AME/Presentation four years later. He then became news design editor at The Boston Globe for a year before becoming Creative Director of Belo Interactive in 1999.

In 2002, he moved back into print as AME/Presentation of The Arizona Republic in Phoenix. He joined the Times in January 2006. Read Josh Crutchmer’s announcement of that last job change in the VizEds archive.

Koz shares a birthday with Elisa Glass of the University of Missouri, director Quentin Tarantino, actor Brenda Song, architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, singer Mariah Carey and Stacy Ferguson of The Black Eyed Peas.

Plus, today is National Joe Day. Seriously. The way it works: Everyone has the right today — and today only — to ask everyone to call them “Joe.”

So best wishes, Koz — or Chris or Joe or whatever you want to be called today — for a happy birthday!
