Happy birthday, Chris Kozlowski
Let’s pause a moment to offer the happiest of VizEds birthday wishes to Christopher Kozlowski, design director for news and sports at The St. Petersburg Times. Koz turns 46 today.

Koz has been in St. Pete for a little over two years. His professional resume reads a bit like that Johnny Cash song, “I’ve Been Everywhere.”
A 1986 graduate of Eastern Michigan University, Koz worked at year as a reporter for The Northville Record and Novi News in Michigan before landing a job as a designer at the Ft. Wayne, Indiana, News-Sentinel. Three years later, he became Design Editor of The Lansing State Journal and then Design Editor of The North Hills News Record in Warrendale, Pa.
In 1993, Koz was named Graphics Editor of The Detroit News and was promoted to AME/Presentation four years later. He then became news design editor at The Boston Globe for a year before becoming Creative Director of Belo Interactive in 1999.
In 2002, he moved back into print as AME/Presentation of The Arizona Republic in Phoenix. He joined the Times in January 2006. Read Josh Crutchmer’s announcement of that last job change in the VizEds archive.

Koz shares a birthday with Elisa Glass of the University of Missouri, director Quentin Tarantino, actor Brenda Song, architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, singer Mariah Carey and Stacy Ferguson of The Black Eyed Peas.
Plus, today is National Joe Day. Seriously. The way it works: Everyone has the right today — and today only — to ask everyone to call them “Joe.”
So best wishes, Koz — or Chris or Joe or whatever you want to be called today — for a happy birthday!

I’m going to quote from The Talking Moose, who, while Koz, John Scott, Randy Lovely and I were all manning the design desk in Fort Wayne, would pop up on our Mac Plus and say:
“Nice hair, Chris!”
Still is. Happy day.

As an avid supporter of National Joe Day, I hereby proclaim Christopher Kozlowski an honorary Joe. Yes, today may have seemed like an ordinary, average day, but Koz is no average Joe.
Happy birthday, bud.

Happy birthday, Koz, from Michigan, land of the unending winter. Hoping all is well. From the look of your portfolio, you’re still “the man” when it comes to cranking out high-end work. Well done!
