The 2007 College Designer of the Year has found a home. And it’s in sunny Sarasota.

Danny DeJarnette, news design director of the Herald-Tribune, writes:

I’m grateful for all the publishers out there who couldn’t or wouldn’t make room on their payrolls for Travis Ricks, giving Sarasota the opportunity to land one of the most promising young designers around. Having fulfilled an extended internship, and then a full-time but temporary position in Fort Lauderdale, Travis is now heading across the state of Florida, giving up the Atlantic Ocean for the Gulf of Mexico and becoming neighbors with the likes of Maria Sharapova, Dick Vitale and Stephen King. Well, sort of. I mean, at least they all own houses here!

Travis begins his new job Monday, April 7.

Travis graduated in May from Michigan State University with a degree in — now, get this — music performance.

Heh. I dare you guys to challenge him to karaoke at the next SND workshop!

Travis worked at The State News and was named College Designer of the Year in the daily division. He served an internship last fall at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and then was brought back this spring as a temp.

Congratulations, Travis! I remember critiquing Travis’s work in Boston also. Glad to see he’s landed a job in the land of the sun. Someone down there introduce him to stone crab claws.

Congrats on finding a great job Travis! I knew you could do it.

Yay Travis! I knew he’d find something good, he’s just gotta smile more! Silly music kids, always contemplating their next epic piece. :)

Going to have to change that Web site tagline to “Working hard.”

Well, I guess we dragged our heels too long on trying to decide whether to fly Travis up for an interview. Congratulations, Travis!

I’m looking forward to working in the newsroom with Travis. I had the pleasure of meeting him in the newsroom just a short while ago. Hey, Travis, were two months out from the start of hurricane season, let the brainstorming start. :)

Speaking as a SH-T alumnus, Travis, you’ll enjoy the city and the beaches.

Make sure you bring a hearing aid, so you can hear the person in the cubicle next to you — you’ll hear people across the building louder than you will your neighbors, thanks to the funny newsroom ceiling in the new building!

Congratulations Travis! I can’t wait to see all the amazing designs you do. Enjoy the sun. I’ll be thinking of you next winter from Michigan when I ask myself daily why I live in a state that snows.

Congratulations! I will definitely miss having you around, especially when I am trying to do something in CCI!

I am happy that you found a job in a state where it does not snow. But, did it have to be so far away from me? I am very proud of you! Congratulations Sweetie!
