Virginian-Pilot hires designer/illustrator Brandon Stuck

Brandon Stuck will begin work as a news page designer for The Virginian-Pilot on March 24.

Gene Simmons? No, that’s Brandon.

A 2006 graduate of Ball State, Brandon came to Norfolk that fall to work at the brand-new free daily tab, Link. He stayed only six months or so, but that was enough to pick up an SND award for a portfolio of his cover design work.

Brandon was then snapped up by Chicago’s RedEye in April 2007. He did a terrific job there, Chris Courtney tells us.

At that point, though, silly things like employment and geography fell victim to a more powerful force: Love.

Brandon and his sweetie, Miranda

Brandon left RedEye last fall to return to Norfolk to be with his financé, Miranda Mulligan, a multimedia and graphic artist for The Virginian-Pilot.

Brandon filled in for odd assignments here and there at the Pilot and Link. He found a nice design job outside of the industry. He and Miranda are scheduled to be married March 14 — a week from tomorrow — in Orlando.

But when they return as a couple, a couple weeks later, Miranda will resume her job as a multimedia whiz and Brandon will start on the Pilot’s famed design desk.

And we couldn’t be happier.

Congratulations, Brandon! Welcome back to Brambleton Avenue!

Dude freakin’ rocks. The few Sundays we’ve had him around downstairs since he came back to Norfolk reminded me how much I missed having him around. He’s someone great to throw ideas off of and has that sort of intangible energy for his work that only a handful of designers really have.

And he’s really modest about it. Which is the best part. He’s great because he keeps experimenting and bringing new elements to his work. He just gets visual communication like so few other people in our field really do.

Have a good wedding and a safe return, Brandon!

In wake of an e-mail I recently got daring to praise someone who’s been out of school less than two years, I doubly stand by my words of praise of Brandon.

  3. Matt Perry Says:

Congrats, Brandon. The Ball State tradition is alive and well. Nice work.
