Heads up, students: A roundup of items for you college-types

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Here’s a roundup of items that may be of interest to college students on a busy Wednesday…

NEW SCHOLARSHIPS

Last week, the Society for News Design Foundation announced two new scholarships for visual journalism students.

The first — the SND Foundation Scholarship — will be a $2,000 scholarship awarded annually to any visual journalism sophomore, junior or senior, in print or interactive or both. The deadline for application is June 13.

The second — SND’s Edmund C. Arnold Scholarship — will be a $5,000 award given annually to a visual journalism student at Syracuse University. The deadline for applying is May 30.

Read all about them and find links to application forms at the SND/Update web site.

‘THE INTERN’ RETURNS TO SND/VEGAS

Our host for SND/Vegas this fall — Bill Gaspard, former president of the Society and the design guru of The Las Vegas Sun — has announced the return of “The Intern” contest for this year’s workshop.

This year’s contest — the third annual “Intern”-fest — will be a little different, however.

For starters, you won’t have to win a first round just to participate in Vegas. You will have to register in advance.

Bill writes:

Every student who applies and shows up for the free student workshop on Sunday can participate in the first two rounds of the competition…

Your first step is to submit your application.

Semi-finalists will be chosen based on the application and performance in a live visual challenge exercise at the end of the student workshop. They will be announced poolside at the opening reception Sunday night.

The semi-finalists will then participate in group and one-on-one interview sessions with the judges at a Monday luncheon. After that, winners will be chosen and announced at our Tuesday morning general session.

…Best of all, if you don’t win one of the competition spots, we’re arranging a mini “job fair” for students and potential employers so that everyone who comes looking for an internship still can walk away with a job.

Prizes so far — more will be listed later — are paid internships at The Arizona Republic and the Poynter Institute.

Sounds like a great deal, folks. Even if you don’t win, you can still win. Read more about it here.

AND, SPEAKING OF VEGAS…

A student designer e-mailed me recently, seeking tips for what to do at — and how to prepare for — the Vegas workshop.

It’s a little early for me to have pulled together my annual workshop tips post. But because you asked, we’re working on it now. Worry not; we’ll cover all the tips, especially for students and first-time attendees.

venue for SND/Vegas, Sept. 7-9. The resort is
the venue, I mean. Not the pool.

LAST-MINUTE INTERNSHIPS

Still looking for an internship for this summer? Here’s what we know about:

* A temporary, three-month page designer position working with Scott Goldman and his team at The Indianapolis Star.

* The Hour newspaper group in Norwalk, Conn., is seeking two interns who can write, shoot photos and do the audio/video thing for multimedia. They’re unpaid internships, but the ad says “exceptions can be made for the right candidate.”

* St. Mary’s Today, a small daily in Waldorf, Md., is seeking an intern who can report, work the news desk and post stories online.

* The Annapolis Capital in Maryland is looking for two non-paid multimedia interns for its web operation.

* The Chautauqua Institution in New York is looking for four page designers to put together a daily tab for its busy summer season. Learn more about the Institution here.

* Ah, to hell with an internship. Go to work full-time for Dean Lockwood and his top-notch visual outfit of the San Antonio Express-News.

SPEAKING OF INTERNS, DID YOU SEE OUR INTERN ROUNDUP?

Better yet, why aren’t you in it?

We published it Monday morning, here in the blog.

Do you have an internship this summer? Did you graduate, putting you into the job market? Drop us a line. We’re always eager to provide coverage or face time for bright young visual journalists.

Coverage of Monday’s tornadoes in Hampton Roads

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I’m out sick today. Aching muscles and joints; very tired. I hope I’m not coming down with the flu. Diabetics have trouble with the flu.

And what’s worse: I’m getting no sympathy at all from my wife — who’s also at home today, sicker than I am. At least I can get around a little. She’s still in bed, not feeling well at all.

Despite the fact my brain was AWOL Monday, I got far enough ahead on my ongoing city budgets project that the Pilot can possibly spare me a day. I’ll post more about that later, perhaps.

Just as I was preparing to go home early, reports came in of a possible tornado in Suffolk, southwest of Norfolk. I felt really guilty about leaving only one artist in the department to handle whatever resulted from the storm. John Earle and our boss, design director Paul Nelson, assured me they could deal with it. Especially since I was fading pretty fast, at that point.

So I staggered out to my car, hopped on the interstate and… ran smack into a wall of rain. Which, naturally, brought traffic to a standstill. It took me 90 minutes to get to my home in Virginia Beach — about double what it normally takes.

When I finally got home, I discovered that the storm cell — the same one I had just driven through — sure enough did generate a tornado. In fact, it destroyed a nice neighborhood in Suffolk, trashed a shopping center and injured 200 patients in a hospital. No fatalities though, thank God.

In retrospect, a PT Cruiser was probably not the best place in which to ride out a storm like that.

I’ve not yet walked downstairs to pick up today’s Pilot to see how we covered it. So we resort to The Newseum

Pilot tornado front

Looks like my buddy John Earle got along fine without me last night, after all. The map locates alls the severe damage on the north side of Suffolk, along the bypass.

The funnel reportedly traveled northeast, skipped across the Elizabeth River and made landfall among the piers at the enormous Navy base just north of Norfolk — the home of the entire Atlantic Fleet. But the tornado had lost enough force by that time that it caused damage to neither base nor ships.

I also like the tiny shot, in the upper left, of the twister itself. That’s from a local TV station. More about stormchasing in a moment…

Here’s how Link covered it today:

Link tornado front

I’m guessing a lot of folks are appreciating our web coverage. Our web site, Pilotonline.com, is running very, very slowly this morning.

Among the things we have there is the obligatory photo gallery. I’m happy to see the incredibly talented Steve Early was on the scene Monday.

Here’s a 16-year-old resident, leaping over debris in the Burnett’s Mill section of Suffolk:

Suffolk tornado - debris

Here are cars that have been tossed around like Hot Wheels in a shopping center, across the street from Obici Hospital:

Suffolk tornado - cars

The hospital itself wasn’t struck directly. But 200 people were injured by debris and glass when the windows blew out, officials said.

One more picture: The Pilot’s Delores Johnson snapped this one of a Suffolk mother, strolling with her baby in the aftermath of the storm:

Suffolk tornado - delores

Again, you can find all this — and much more — at the Pilot’s web site.

The most extraordinary thing there today, however, is this: Video of the tornado on the ground, shot at 4:32 p.m. Monday by Portsmouth-based stormchaser Jesse Bass III:

Tornado video 1

Tornado video 2

Tornado video 3

Tornado video 4

Now there’s something you don’t see every day. Here’s a direct link to the video.

If you have a tornado — or other nasty weather — rake across your area, you can find the latest raw reports, as they stream in to the National Weather Service computers, via the Storm Prediction Center. Click on “reports” and choose the time frame you want:

Storm reports from Monday

Blue dots indicate wind damage. Green are hail reports. Red are tornadoes.

When the NWS receives a report of a sighting or damage, the report goes into their database. Which then generates listings for the map and for the text listings that appear below the map:

More storm reports

Whenever you have storms passing through your area, pull up the SPC site and update the page constantly. It’s the quickest way to follow the reports as area police and other officials pick their way through the aftermath.

Go there now and bookmark it.

OK, that’s it. I’ve been awake for about an hour. Time for a nap.

Twenty-eight interns for summer 2008

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Wondering where all the cool kids are interning this summer?

Wonder no longer. Below is a glance at 28 of college journalism’s brightest and best. Where they’re working, when they’re graduating and what they hope to do.

Heads up, visual editors: You’ll note there are a couple who don’t have internships lined up for this summer. There are a couple more who will be entering the full-time job market at the end of summer.

Just remember: You saw them here first!

I can’t wait until I get to Indiana. I’m totally stoked about the opportunity to work with the web people (their sites are amazing), work with Scott Goldman and all the other people I’ve heard a lot about.

Right now, I’m working on social-networked news and environmental public journalism. I’m trying to get officials and the public together for a public forum about a huge coal power plant being proposed in Nevada.

In fact, a couple of months ago, we wrote extensively about one of Michael’s public journalism projects.

Michael, by the way, was SND’s Student Designer of the Year for 2006-2007. He’ll be a speaker during the student session at SND/Vegas this fall.

You’ll recall that Bridget was the winner of the second annual The Intern contest at SND/Boston. Her prize was first choice of several incredible internships. She chose the Times.

Here’s hoping she blogs about her summer adventure.

Chloe Park

Graduates: May 2010
2008 internship: She just finished a design internship at The Arizona Republic and is currently looking for something for this summer.
Previous internships: Life section design at USA Today

I took a semester off from school to enjoy the Arizona winter weather. What was supposed to be a 12-week gig was extended indefinitely (though I requested my last day to be May 2–so it’ll be a total of 16 weeks).

The first half of the time I spent out here was really devoted to my internship, but I have to admit that I have created a whole new life out here for me. It’s going to be hard to leave… though inevitable.

Not only am I considering transferring, but I think I may pick up another major–business, maybe–I just feel like I need to give myself some more options. All this is great timing, because I am only a sophomore and have half of my college education left–plenty of time to change and change again.

Regarding that transfer: Chloe is considering two wonderful schools: UNC-Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia. She’s heard from the former, but not the latter.

Previous internships:
COXnet, Inc. (with Cox papers) in Atlanta, Adams & Longino Advertising and The Daily Reflector in Greenville, N.C.

I’m having a crazy final semester, trying to cram all of the college life experiences, the last tests, projects and design enlightenment into the last few weeks of classes. Exhausting, but exhilarating — sounds a lot like journalism!

Tiff Schwarz

Graduates: August 2008
2008 internship: Doesn’t have one lined up yet
Previous internships: Dothan (Ala.) Eagle, Asbury Park (N.J.) Press, St. Louis Post Dispatch, Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News

This has been a rather strange year. My ups are down and downs are up. However, as I have been without a proper design job and just regular work, I realize how strong my passion for media is.

I’d love to find an internship that would challenge me, give me
experience in Flash, work in features or even magazine-style design. With my portfolio, I feel I need experience in sports design, graphics and multimedia work.

Steph Yiu

Graduates: This past weekend.
2008 internship: Design at The Boston Globe
Previous internships: The Oregonian; Northwestern magazine; the Museum of Contemporary Art; CenterstageChicago.com; Shape magazine in Singapore

Life is just one giant transition right now! I’m trying to finish my art history thesis on “Second Life avatar self-portraiture.”

Last quarter, I helped orchestrate a collaboration between the “traditional newspaper” and “alternative website” on campus (like the real world, huh?) and in 6 weeks we put together 24@NU. It was a ton of fun.

And, I took two awesome classes: a community journalism/web design independent study with Professor Susan Mango Curtis, and a terrific web programming class.

I’m looking for a full-time job… otherwise I have to leave the country next April when my visa expires.

Anything to do with multimedia and newspapers - web design, producing web video, doing cool community-based web projects.

Samples:

Steph has no online portfolio, but she recently finished work on this multimedia presentation. A couple of screen grabs:

This year has gone really well, I’ve taken many reporting and design classes and have really been developing my skills. I’m headed to Spain for half the summer to study visual communications and graphics with Karl Gude and I can’t wait to go.

Since I will only be available from late June-August, I didn’t apply for any summer internships, but I will be looking for any experience in design that I can get in the coming year, as well as next summer.
