Happy birthday, Randy Stano

Here’s wishing a very, very special VizEds birthday to Randy Stano, a superb journalism professor at the University of Miami.

Randy turns 60 today.

Randy is the Knight Foundation Chair Professor for the School of Communication at the University of Miami’s School of Communication. He’s also the editorial advisor for Miami’s yearbook, The Ibis.

A graduate of Syracuse University, Randy was Texas high school journalism teacher of the year and National Journalism Teacher of the Year. He was the assistant art director for The Kansas City Times and The Kansas City Star and, later, director of editorial art and design at The Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, N.Y.

In 1985, Randy became director of editorial art and design for The Miami Herald, leading the team that won a Pulitzer Prize and Best of Show in the annual Society for News Design contest for its coverage of Hurricane Andrew.

He has redesigned a number of papers including La Nación in Costa Rica, The Prague Post in the Czech Republic and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

degree from Ball State and is now a multimedia
producer for The Virginian-Pilot.

I’ve met Randy a few times and have found him to be engaging and fun. And he certainly knows his stuff. His students swear there’s not a better journalism professor anywhere.

Randy was president of SND in 1992 and wasa quickcourse chairman for several years. Those Hawaiian-style shirts I enjoy wearing? I was first inspired to try them after observing Randy wearing them at a quickcourse, more than a decade-and-a-half ago.

Randy shares a birthday with actors Ali MacGraw, Debbie Reynolds, Lon Chaney and Gordon Jump, historian William Manchester, baseball Hall of Famer Phil Niekro and German Chencellor Otto Von Bismarck.

Plus, today is One Cent Day. Seriously.

Best wishes for a fabulous birthday, Randy!

Randy was amazing as a cute little instructor of “Superivising Secondary School Publications” back at the Summer Journalism Institute at The University of Iowa in 1974. He’s still cute (or maybe charming is a better word choice) and still talented. He is instrumental in the professional success of his students by encouraging them to be fearlessly creative and in the continuous awards this the University of Miami Ibis yearbook garners each year by allowing the outrageous while pushing the basics. It’s a joy for me to continue to be his friend and his yearbook publisher.

    Happy Birthday, Randy!
