Happy birthday, Tiffany Pease

Let’s pause a moment to offer the happiest of VizEds birthdays to Tiffany Pease, Design Director for projects and sports at The San Jose Mercury News.

A 2003 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Tiffany spent three years as a news and sports designer at The Charlotte Observer. She jumped to the west coast in June 2006 to become the 1A and projects designer for The San Jose Mercury News. The Merc promoted her last September.

The Pease piece (heh) that’s my absolute favorite, however, is this one from her days at The Charlotte Observer:

Tiffany Pease’s Brackets page

Using a big pile of hardware to make the point it’s bracket time again for basketball fans. You just can’t get any more clever than this, folks.

I fell in love with this page when I first saw it. So when I finally met Tiffany in Syracuse last year, I made a complete fool of myself by gushing all over her. I felt like Chris Farley in those old Saturday Night Live fanboy skits: “You know that time when you put a bunch of brackets on the cover of a special section? And it was sideways? And it was Bracket Sunday? …That was COOL!”

Tiffany shares a birthday with a slew of icons from the 1970s and 1980s: Musicians Emmylou Harris and Marvin Gaye and actors Ron Palillo (”Horshack” from Welcome Back, Kotter), Buddy Ebsen (”Uncle Jed” from the The Beverly Hillbillies) and Alec Guinness (”Obi Wan Kenobi” from the original Star Wars movie).

Plus, today is National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day. Seriously.

Best wishes, Tiffany, for a happy birthday!
