If you’ve not yet seen Martin Gee’s photographic tribute to his friends at The San Jose Mercury News, then drop everything and go there now.
It got play Friday at the Editors’ Weblog, Editor & Publisher, SND/Update and Romenesko.
The original collection, I believe, was posted at Flickr. Martin wrote this intro to his photo gallery:
the last round of layoffs and buyouts really hurt me. i mean, each one does but this one especially. this place feels like a morgue. an abusive relationship. remnants everywhere. empty cubicles. empty chairs. abandoned office equipment. goodbye emails. besides looking for a new job and building a massive assemblage, this is a way for me to deal.
Perhaps one of the most poignant photos is this one:
Martin writes:
[rich ramirez] committed suicide during the last round of layoffs.
The mention of Ramirez’ suicide in the Editors’ Weblog piece — posted by Robb Montgomery — produced a number of unflattering comments. Join the debate here (click and scroll down).
By the way, you can find a moving slide show tribute to Ramirez posted last year by the Merc’s news photo staff here.
Powerful work, Martin. Thanks for sharing.
