Is no one hiring? We just hired 3, says Orlando Sentinel’s Bo Burton
Orlando Sentinel AME/Visuals Bonita Burton sent out a happy message today announcing three — count ‘em, three — new hires:
I’m delighted to announce that three award-winning visual journalists will be joining the Sentinel in the coming weeks - just in time to help get some of our exciting redesign work off the ground.
Ebony Stith, a features designer at the Palm Beach Post, will join Wesley Alden’s dayside design team on April 28.
Ebony came to the Post via the Detroit News and Flint Journal, collecting honors from NABJ along the way. She and her husband, Derek, are the parents of a seven-year-old daughter, Erin, and a 7-month-old son, Darren.

Karen Bellville, a graphic artist at the Fort Myers [Fla.] News Press will join Todd Stewart’s graphics/weekend design team on May 5.
Karen has worked in a variety of advertising and newsroom jobs for Gannett before finding her niche in 3D graphics, work that has won recognition from SND.
The first two pieces were SND award winners:

Autumn Heep, a designer at the Syracuse [N.Y.] Post-Standard will join Stephen Komives‘ nightside design team on May 19.
Autumn is a Syracuse alum who parlayed her college internship into a full-time gig there several years ago. Autumn has assisted in the SND judging and last year won the paper’s first SND award.

A few other changes in the group:
* Joan Andrews will move to the dayside team.
* Wonetha Jackson will move to the weekend design team.
* Tory Hargro is going to cross-train in photo for the next few months, helping us get a more robust photojournalism channel going on the web.
Wow. Is Bo leaving anyone else to be hired by the rest of the news design community? On the other hand, is anyone else in the news design community hiring?
What an impressive group you’re bringing in, Bo. Congratulations to all involved!

Congrats to the Sentinel on finding the resources to keep visuals important in the news at a time when a lot of papers are becoming threadbare.

Thanks for the post, Charles. We’re thrilled to welcome Ebony, Karen and Autumn on board! It’s true that the case for hiring is a hard one to make these days, so I couldn’t be more happy to see our team moving forward in such a big way.

seriously, great hires. So, apparently the entire state of Florida is populated by page designers (with a few old folk thrown in)…

Congrats Bo
Autumn will be greatly missed at The Post-Standard. I’m happy for her but sad for us.
