Twenty-eight interns for summer 2008

Wondering where all the cool kids are interning this summer?

Wonder no longer. Below is a glance at 28 of college journalism’s brightest and best. Where they’re working, when they’re graduating and what they hope to do.

Heads up, visual editors: You’ll note there are a couple who don’t have internships lined up for this summer. There are a couple more who will be entering the full-time job market at the end of summer.

Just remember: You saw them here first!

This year at school has gone well. I am extremely excited for my summer internship; I think it’s going to be a great experience. This semester I worked with Ball Bearings as a designer, and I also developed a few flash projects as well. Ball Bearings is Ball State’s online multimedia publication.

It’s been the most difficult challenge of my short career so far. I am really excited to see it launch in the fall.

Previous internships: Graphic design intern at the Franklin G. Burroughs - Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach (mostly making logos, flyers and brochures for exhibits as a freelance internship, Rob says)

Rob, by the way, was named Student Designer of the Year in the non-daily category.

This year has been great. I’ve been trying to work on as much art and design as I possibly can. It’s been really fun working with my magazine staff trying to improve on the magazine that we put out the previous semester. I have one year left of school.

I’m seeking an internship outside of South Carolina, preferably a bit farther North. I would love to work with someone who has been in the business and from whom I can learn. I would also like to work in a challenging environment. I really enjoy conceptual work.

2008 internship: Visuals intern (general design, graphics and/or web) at The Indianapolis Star via a Pulliam Fellowship.
Previous internships: Design at The Courier-Journal, Louisville, Ky.

I can’t wait until I get to Indiana. I’m totally stoked about the opportunity to work with the web people (their sites are amazing), work with Scott Goldman and all the other people I’ve heard a lot about.

Right now, I’m working on social-networked news and environmental public journalism. I’m trying to get officials and the public together for a public forum about a huge coal power plant being proposed in Nevada.

In fact, a couple of months ago, we wrote extensively about one of Michael’s public journalism projects.

Michael, by the way, was SND’s Student Designer of the Year for 2006-2007. He’ll be a speaker during the student session at SND/Vegas this fall.

2008 internship: The New York Times art department
Previous internships: Art intern for Autoweek magazine

I’m pumped for the new gig! I’m counting down the days until May 24th — the day I leave for New York City — and I’ve got less than 40 days left.

You’ll recall that Bridget was the winner of the second annual The Intern contest at SND/Boston. Her prize was first choice of several incredible internships. She chose the Times.

Here’s hoping she blogs about her summer adventure.

CHLOE PARK
James Madison University

Chloe Park

Graduates: May 2010
2008 internship: She just finished a design internship at The Arizona Republic and is currently looking for something for this summer.
Previous internships: Life section design at USA Today

I took a semester off from school to enjoy the Arizona winter weather. What was supposed to be a 12-week gig was extended indefinitely (though I requested my last day to be May 2–so it’ll be a total of 16 weeks).

The first half of the time I spent out here was really devoted to my internship, but I have to admit that I have created a whole new life out here for me. It’s going to be hard to leave… though inevitable.

Not only am I considering transferring, but I think I may pick up another major–business, maybe–I just feel like I need to give myself some more options. All this is great timing, because I am only a sophomore and have half of my college education left–plenty of time to change and change again.

Regarding that transfer: Chloe is considering two wonderful schools: UNC-Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia. She’s heard from the former, but not the latter.

2008 internship: The Virginian-Pilot, in the new combined design/multimedia/graphics department
Previous internships:
COXnet, Inc. (with Cox papers) in Atlanta, Adams & Longino Advertising and The Daily Reflector in Greenville, N.C.

I’m having a crazy final semester, trying to cram all of the college life experiences, the last tests, projects and design enlightenment into the last few weeks of classes. Exhausting, but exhilarating — sounds a lot like journalism!

TIFF SCHWARZ

Tiff Schwarz

Graduates: August 2008
2008 internship: Doesn’t have one lined up yet
Previous internships: Dothan (Ala.) Eagle, Asbury Park (N.J.) Press, St. Louis Post Dispatch, Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News

This has been a rather strange year. My ups are down and downs are up. However, as I have been without a proper design job and just regular work, I realize how strong my passion for media is.

I’d love to find an internship that would challenge me, give me
experience in Flash, work in features or even magazine-style design. With my portfolio, I feel I need experience in sports design, graphics and multimedia work.

STEPH YIU
Northwestern University

Steph Yiu

Graduates: This past weekend.
2008 internship: Design at The Boston Globe
Previous internships: The Oregonian; Northwestern magazine; the Museum of Contemporary Art; CenterstageChicago.com; Shape magazine in Singapore

Life is just one giant transition right now! I’m trying to finish my art history thesis on “Second Life avatar self-portraiture.”

Last quarter, I helped orchestrate a collaboration between the “traditional newspaper” and “alternative website” on campus (like the real world, huh?) and in 6 weeks we put together 24@NU. It was a ton of fun.

And, I took two awesome classes: a community journalism/web design independent study with Professor Susan Mango Curtis, and a terrific web programming class.

I’m looking for a full-time job… otherwise I have to leave the country next April when my visa expires.

Anything to do with multimedia and newspapers - web design, producing web video, doing cool community-based web projects.

Samples:

Steph has no online portfolio, but she recently finished work on this multimedia presentation. A couple of screen grabs:

ANDREA ZAGATA
Michigan State University

Andrea Zagata

Graduates: May 2010
2008 internship: None
Previous internships: None

This year has gone really well, I’ve taken many reporting and design classes and have really been developing my skills. I’m headed to Spain for half the summer to study visual communications and graphics with Karl Gude and I can’t wait to go.

Since I will only be available from late June-August, I didn’t apply for any summer internships, but I will be looking for any experience in design that I can get in the coming year, as well as next summer.

Samples: Not yet available
