Bids reportedly in for The Weather Channel

And, of course, selling The Weather Channel is the first step in Landmark Communications’ planned sale of its assets. Which would include my paper — The Virginian-Pilot — plus dailies in Roanoke and Greensboro, a slew of weeklies, TV stations and other media.

Jim Cantore of The Weather Channel

This, according to a brief story posted today at The New York Times‘ web site:

An investor group led by NBC Universal and two private equity firms appeared to be leading the bidding for the Weather Channel, as final offers were due Friday night, people briefed on the matter said. NBC, the Blackstone Group and Bain Capital were offering about $3.5 billion including debt, these people said.

$3.5 billion is a bit less than the $5 billion Landmark was reportedly hoping for. I guess it really is a buyer’s market.

The NYT piece said the winning bid could be announced as early as next week. Which fits with the timetable we had been given earlier.

After Jim Cantore (above) and the rest have been sold, Landmark can concentrate on selling its next-largest assets, including its three daily papers.

Friday night in Waterbury, Conn.

Met Darren in Philly and flew together to Hartford. Drove to Waterbury. Drank way too much beer.

Left to right: Me, our host, Scott Griffin of the Waterbury Republican-American and Darren Sanefski of the Syracuse… aw, whatever the paper is in Syracuse.

Did I mention we had too much beer?

It’s not too late to take part in the Small Paper Summit, at the offices of the Republican-American, here in Waterbury Saturday. The registration desk opens at 9:30 a.m.  Read more about it here.

Spotted this week on a busy D.C. street…

Tongue planted firmly in cheek, Kalamazoo Gazette design editor Kris Kinkade writes:

I’m so good, my work is hanging in a museum.

Former Gazette photo intern Lindsey Wuepper Tait snapped this photo while visiting the Newseum in Washington, D.C. last weekend:

Kalamazoo at the Newseum

Lindsey writes:

I was so excited when I saw the Kalamazoo Gazette in their awesome gallery along Constitution Avenue.

Kris, of course, designed the page. The lead photo was by Jonathon Gruenke.

Lindsey is now a photog with the Gloucester Daily Times, near Boston.

Read about the Newseum’s new building here. Read about the 20 freakin’ dollars they’ll charge you to get in here.

Top 10 reasons to attend the Small-Paper Summit this Saturday

From our home office in Waterbury, Conn., here are the top 10 reasons you should drop everything and make plans to attend the SND Small-Paper Summit this weekend:

10. It’s only $95 for SND members and $150 for non-members. That’s nearly as cheap as a tank of gas!

9. Until this weekend, only the lucky journalism students at Syracuse University have been able to witness first-hand the Darren Sanefski teaching experience. We hear he’s brilliant. Be there Saturday and find out for yourself!

8. Come hear our host, Scott Griffin, explain to anyone interested in hearing the story why Waterbury is considered by some to be the corruption capital of the U.S.

7. You can bring a couple of tearsheets (or JPEGs or PDFs) with you to be critiqued by the panel.

6. You can watch a Bill Ostendorf presentation for a fraction of his normal consulting fee!

Circle Media Consulting

5. There’s a 60 percent chance of rain and thundershowers forecast for the area Saturday. What the hell else are you going to do?

4. Afterward, you can watch Air Supply in concert, down the street at the Palace Theater. Just think: Air Supply + Charles Apple. That’s a double-dose of hot air!

3. Everything we’ll talk about Saturday will be geared toward small papers and solutions for small papers. Papers just like yours.

2. Lunch is on the house. WooHOO!

And the No. 1 reason to be in Waterbury on Saturday…

1. Because this is the first time since 2005 that a New England paper has hosted a Quick Course. Come to think of it, this is only the sixth Quick Course in 20 years to be held in New England.

When will you get another opportunity like this?

Read more details — including prices and a map showing how to get there — in our earlier post on this topic.

Happy birthday, Katie Kunert

Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to my good friend Katie VanDalsem Kunert of The Des Moines Register.

Me with Katie

Katie with her jackass boss in June 2003.

I hired Katie out of tiny little Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa, eight years ago this summer. She had been the layout editor of the college weekly and was showing great skill as a graphic reporter.

So I took a chance on her. It turned out to be not much of a chance at all: Katie was extremely talented visual journalist and a hard worker. She still is.

In the four-and-a-half years since I left the Register, Katie got married, changed her name and became a mom. She’s blogged about her learning curve for the Register’s web site. Check it out here.

A few examples of her print work:

Katie shares a birthday with Joey Kirk of The Arizona Republic, musicians Melissa Etheridge, Danny Elfman and Noel Gallagher (of Oasis), actor Annette Bening, comedian Bob Hope and politicians Patrick Henry and John F. Kennedy.

Plus, today is End of the Middle Ages Day. Whatever that means.

Best wishes, Katie, for a happy birthday!

Happy birthday, Joey Kirk

Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to Joey Kirk, a sports designer with The Arizona Republic. Joey turns 24 today.

Joey Kirk in the Rockies

Hey, Joey! All the nice scenery is the other
way! Photo from Joey’s Facebook gallery.

Captain Kirk has been with The Arizona Republic nearly a year and a half. A graduate of Texas Tech University — he earned a masters degree in interdisciplinary studies last year — Joey was a finalist in the first-ever “The Intern” contest at SND/Orlando in 2006. He also served a summer fellowship at the Poynter Institute last summer.During his college years, Joey worked for a couple of years as a reporter for The Wylie News. His last year, he was editor-in-chief of the Texas Tech student paper, The Daily Toreador.

A few samples of his work:

Joey also writes a little poetry. Seriously. For example, I love this one:

She waits.
She anticipates.
It’s been more than eight hours.
The sound of keys jiggling the lock open fills her with excitement.
From the bedroom to the front door, she runs.
It’s her time now.
The door opens.
She stands, waiting.
She stares at him.
“Hey, how was your day?” he asks.
No reply.
“I bet it was good. What’d you do?” he asks again.
No reply.
The silence is sweet.
No words are necessary.
The tail waggle says it all.

Plus, today is End of the Middle Ages Day. Whatever that means.

Best wishes, Joey, for a happy birthday!
