Doing anything fun for the new Indiana Jones movie?

[UPDATE: I added some stuff. If you saw this earlier, read it again, please.]

Anyone else out there getting excited about the new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull movie?

We are. In order to commemorate the opening of the new Indiana Jones movie, I’ve bought one of the new Indiana Jones action figures for my desk:

Indiana Jones action figure

Retails at Target, Wal-Mart and similar
outlets for less than $20. Thanks to my
daughter, Elizabeth, who’s starting her
new career as a hand model.

When you hit the switch in his back, Indy swings his whip and you hear a whip-cracking effect. Very, very amusing.

Already, several folks have dropped by my desk to mention Indy ought to get together with a couple of Barbie dolls. But hey, this ain’t that kind of blog…

Today, The Virginian-Pilot ran a full-page guide to Indiana Jones trivia. It includes a timeline of Indy’s life and career, a look at real-life archaeological finds and a look at the three previous movies. Bob Voros did the honors:

This, by the way, was Bob’s very first InDesign production. Up to now, he built his pages in Illustrator and a designer plopped them into a giant hole in the page. Not bad at all.

I’ve seen only a couple other Indiana Jones pages posted so far at NewsPageDesigner: This really nice one by Jennifer Norden of the The Journal Gazette in Ft. Wayne, Indiana:

And this one is from the Sunday Plain Dealer in Cleveland. The illustration is by Ted Crow. Sorry; I don’t have the rest of the page:

How about in your shop? Doing anything interesting for the movie? Let us know about it.

UPDATE:

Folks responded today, but naturally, found that you can’t post jpegs in the comments field of the blog. So allow me to reprint the comments up here, in the main body of this post, where I can add visual aids…

Casey Rogers of The Daily Herald in Provo, Utah, writes:

We don’t do movies for our section covers much, mostly they go in our entertainment tab. But Indiana Jones did provide the main theme for our summer movie preview.

That headline is a scream, Casey. You got away with this in Provo?

Scott Griffin, design editor of the Waterbury, Conn., Republican-American writes:

FYI, parts of the movie were filmed in New Haven, Conn., not far from Waterbury, {{plug coming next}} the site of an SND quick course starring Charles Apple, Darren Sanefski, Vanessa Valdes and Bill Ostendorf.

I was downtown in New Haven when they were setting up for the shoot. They had all the shops fixed up to look 1950ish, with old cars and trucks on the streets. Pretty cool.

Brilliant way to sneak in a plug, my friend. See you in two weeks!

Michael Higdon of the [University of] Nevada Sagebrush writes:

Damn. No, but we already did our preview of Batman and I’m totally calling it when I get to [The Indianapolis Star, where he’s interning this summer].

As usual for Michael, the page is brilliant. I’ll hold off posting it for now — I’ll wait until Batman season rolls around in a few weeks — but you can peek at it in Michael’s NewsPageDesign gallery.

Billy Simkins of The Bakersfield Californian writes:

I usually do A1 but one day a week I’ve started helping sports with their section. Of course, the day I help out sports, it’s Indiana Jones day.

Well, I was able to design the top box but one of our other designers will finish off the page. With these movies, I miss doing the entertainment sections.

Here’s a preview of Wednesday’s top:

Billy, you know how much I dislike the Californian’s busy, busy ‘hot L’ A1 format. But damned if this topper isn’t really, really nice.

Your attention to detail is superb. The bullet holes in the nameplate are a brilliant touch.

Is there anyone else publishing a cool Indiana Jones treatment Wednesday, Thursday or Friday? E-mail me a jpeg, pdf or a link and I’ll post a follow-up piece soon:

Thanks for the feedback, folks! And remember:

It’s not the years — it’s the mileage.

Hey Billy, can you send me a PDF of the Indiana Jones page when its ready? I’ll email you ours if you want to take a closer look.

  9. Billy Simkins Says:

I will Wednesday Bob. I didn’t do it though. Back in the day they use to turn me loose on them before they put me on A1. We hired a couple new designers and one of them designed it. If I would have asked for it they probably would have given it to me but that would have been a cheap shop to steal soemones section when something cool comes along. I’ll score it tomorrow.

I will Wednesday Bob, but I didn’t do it. Back in the day they use to turn me loose on big entertainment packages, now they have me on A1. We hired a couple new designers and one of them knocked it out. If I would have asked for it they probably would have given it to me but that would have been a cheap shop to steal someone’s section when something good came along. I’ll send one out tomorrow.

  11. Bob Voros Says:

Thanks for sending me and Charles the JPEG, Billy. I’m guessing “Eye Street” is the section and has nothing to do with Indy 4, or am I missing something?

for the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it seems like the recipe of a good Indiana Jones film would be 1 part Nazis and 1 part biblical artifact; the Soviet army does a pretty good job of replacing the Nazis, but the other ingredient…

What I’ve poseted here is our A1 top box teasing to our Indiana Jones CP in entertainment.
