Happy birthday, Doug Jessmer
Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to Doug Jessmer, editor of The Pinellas News in St. Petersburg, Fla. Doug turns 36 today (Monday).

Doug has had a big year. He parted company with The Detroit News, moved to Florida, worked in auto sales and in a private print shop and then began work for the Pinellas News, writing a column, redesigning the paper and was named editor this spring.
Doug’s doing some very good work down in Pinellas — circulation about 600 — showing how it can be done at a tiny weekly.

Dougie shares a birthday with musicians Lenny Kravitz, Hank Williams Jr., and Stevie Nicks, astronaut Sally Ride, sportscaster Brent Musburger, comedian Bob Goldthwait and actor John Wayne.
Plus, in addition to Memorial Day, today is Grey Day. Whatever the hell that means.

Grey Day? Funny — my name, Douglas, is a Celtic word meaning “dark gray, dark water, dark river.” But I’m named for MacArthur, not for the color. Coincidence.
Also, Edsel B. Ford, the son of Henry and father of Hank the Deuce, and namesake of the ill-fated Ford division, died on this day. (So to all my friends in Detroit, there’s something for your planners!)
