I was fortunate enough to have coffee/dessert with Jeff a couple of years ago on a visit to Nashville. He reminded me that he had written me a letter while in college seeking career advice. Luckily — and this is literally when I wiped the sweat from my brow thinking that I might not have written back — he said I had replied, and whatever it was that I said in the letter was enough to encourage him to seek a career in visual journalism. Journalism has certainly benefited from his decision, as have lots of other journalists whose lives he’s touched.

So, the happiest of birthdays to you, Jeff, and many happy returns of the day.
