Happy birthday, Katie Kunert

Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to my good friend Katie VanDalsem Kunert of The Des Moines Register.

Me with Katie

Katie with her jackass boss in June 2003.

I hired Katie out of tiny little Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa, eight years ago this summer. She had been the layout editor of the college weekly and was showing great skill as a graphic reporter.

So I took a chance on her. It turned out to be not much of a chance at all: Katie was extremely talented visual journalist and a hard worker. She still is.

In the four-and-a-half years since I left the Register, Katie got married, changed her name and became a mom. She’s blogged about her learning curve for the Register’s web site. Check it out here.

Katie shares a birthday with Joey Kirk of The Arizona Republic, musicians Melissa Etheridge, Danny Elfman and Noel Gallagher (of Oasis), actor Annette Bening, comedian Bob Hope and politicians Patrick Henry and John F. Kennedy.

Plus, today is End of the Middle Ages Day. Whatever that means.

Best wishes, Katie, for a happy birthday!
