Josh Trudell, sports designer extraordinare of the San Antonio Express-News, is leaving journalism to become a catalog designer for a San Antonio-based sporting goods retailer called Team Express.

Josh stares into the giant chasm that will be left
in his life without late-night and weekend hours.
Or maybe that’s the Grand Canyon, which he
visited on vacation last summer. Photo from

He’ll begin his new job May 29.
Josh writes:
They sell mainly baseball and softball equipment, but they’re branching out into football and eventually basketball. The company has been growing steadily, and this position is part of an staffwide expansion plan.
It’s going to be something of a new world for me — starting with working days, Monday-Friday — but it felt like a really good opportunity and the right time to expand my horizons.
It’s been a pleasure working at the Express-News. I feel like this is an underrated paper visually, but I think that is starting to change. I feel I’ve grown and improved a lot here, and I think other people could as well.
I asked Express-News design director Dean Lockwood for comment. Dean replied:
Josh was a great designer for us here, with a superhuman work ethic. Sad to see him go.
You could just say “Dean is sobbing uncontrollably in his office.”
Josh, in turn, wrote:
…Well, it’s probably not the first time I’ve made THAT happen.
Josh has worked at the Express-News for four years. Previously, he spent five years designing pages for The Telegraph in Nashua, N.H., and worked a little less than a year at the Portland (Maine) Press Herald. Josh is a 1997 graduate of Boston’s Northeastern University.
Josh has been on a hell of a roll lately. In just the past three months, San Antonio has hosted the NCAA Final Four and a pile of NBA playoff games. A peek at some of his recent work:
What the hell, let’s look at a few more:

Congratulations, Josh! We’ll miss you!

Wow. We’ll miss you, Trudell. Enjoy yourself.
I got to hang out with Josh for a night at the Orlando workshop. I’d never met the guy before, but was glad after that workshop that I knew him. He’s really and truly a class act and just a really fun guy to be around. Good luck, Josh — sincerely.
Good luck Josh!
We’re Press Herald Hell Buds forever!
Thanks for the thoughts, guys. I’ve appreciated them a lot. I’m looking forward to starting a new adventure, but I hope to stay in touch with the great people I’ve met in this business.
J-TRU! Well, this wasn’t news I thought I’d ever read, but best wishes to you on jumping the Grand Canyon, uh, leaving journalism. Don’t be a stranger. Or at least any stranger than the rest of us.
