Virginian-Pilot’s David Putney moves from print to online
Virginian-Pilot designer David Putney — surely one of the more colorful characters you’ll ever meet — is leaving the print side. He’ll join the Pilot’s online operation as a producer.
The announcement came down today from senior producer Mark Edelen:
David, a Virginia transplant originally from Peoria, Ill., joins online after eight years with The Pilot. Previously, he worked at newspapers in Michigan, suburban Chicago and St. Thomas. He has been at The Pilot since November 1999 as a designer. He left to start up Link in the summer of 2006, and came back to The Pilot in October 2007.
Since coming to The Pilot, Dave has designed pretty much every page we produce. He’s been a font of ideas, researching and designing such diverse topics as “75 Things We Love and Hate About Star Wars,” the “How Do I” series, a compendium on William Shatner and the 25th Anniversary of the Macintosh computer. And along the way, he’s picked up SND awards, saved us from corrections and kept his colleagues laughing with his dry wit.
David will begin transitioning to online with training this week.

If you’ve never visited David’s web site, now would be a good time to check it out. There’s always something interesting there. Odd as hell. But very interesting.
