First look: Redesign of the Allentown, Pa., Morning Call

We reported that the Morning Call of Allentown, Pa., redesigned Monday. Today, we finally have one image to show you:

Before-and-after

That’s Sunday’s front on the left; Tuesday’s page on the right.

At first glance, the changes appear to be minimal. The new one is a bit more colorful, with lots of type reversed out of solid color boxes. I hope their presses are good.

The new typefaces appear to be a bit more elegant than the old ones. As Craig Larimer, AME for visuals, told us Monday:

Typography has not changed … much. Using Poynter OS Display, Agenda family (Bd Cond.) for headlines, Quiosco for body copy.

Allentown, before and after

We’re still trying to get ahold of some inside pages and section fronts. If you have any to share, please do.

I really enjoy the bold color on the front with the type reversed. It really pops and grabs my attention.

Redesign? As the AME of Visuals points out, “Typography has not changed … much.” Agreed. Not much else has changed either. Maybe I’m too old school and totally out of it, but a redesign is simply NOT a targeted repackaging of the previous design for the second time this year. In the before and after pages it is clear only two things have really changed. The depth and prominence of the skyboxes in numerous approaches and the shrunken flush left nameplate that seems to throw the page off balance. Was hoping for a total and improved approach such as sister papers in Orlando or Fort Lauderdale. A long time reader noticed this is the third look this year. The previous example has been around only a few months since the web width changed for Tribune to save on paper, I presume. Best of luck with it and looking forward to a TRUE redesign in your future.
