Orlando Sentinel’s Tory Hargo moves to USA Today

Tory Hargro, a multimedia artist with the Orlando Sentinel, will become a multimedia producer at USA Today.

Tory Hargro

Tory will be the second multimedia whiz this year to leap from Orlando to USA Today. He follows in the footsteps of William Couch, who made a similar move in March.

Sentinel AME for Visuals Bonita Burton announced Wednesday:

Tory joined the Sentinel just over a year ago fresh off a Poynter fellowship he earned at SND Orlando. It was at that SND event, hosted by the Sentinel, that we first got to know Tory and his considerable talent. Tory came to Orlando as one of 10 national finalists in an intense design competition. He immediately rose above the pack with an austere video introduction set in his Katrina-ravaged neighborhood. Once onsite he wowed judges with an uncanny ability to push the boundaries of every medium. He turned the tables on his interviewers. He turned a photo page into a sculpture. He turned his Poynter application into a fingerpainting project. And he turned every one of his competitors into friends for life.

It has been exciting to see Tory’s innovative ambition at work in our newsroom. His arrival added interactive graphics to our repertoire with long-term projects like the final flight of Col. McCoy and quick-turn web work like the I-4 pileup. He also built graphics for the paper and cross-trained as a photo/video/audio editor. (See the culmination of Tory’s intelligent, thoughtful sensibilities at OrlandoSentinel.com/photo)

Tory is familiar with the D.C. area, having worked as a senate intern earlier in his career. Still, we’ll be toasting him from the beach on his first day in chilly November.

Please join me in wishing Tory well in his new job, and stay tuned for details of a suitable farewell.
