Alternate weekly election covers

This afternoon, Martin Gee was asking if I could post a selection of election covers from the nation’s alternate weeklies.

I’d love to, I told him. But only if there was a Newseum for alt-weeklies. Or, at least, a NewsPageDesigner. Barring that, I’d have to surf to every alt-weekly Web site and hunt down cover images. Which would be a nightmare.

So after dinner tonight, I log back on and check Jim Romensko one more time, only to discover a link to this Flickr page containing — you guessed it — a selection of election covers from alt-weeklies.

Creepy. But in a cool way.

A few of the best…

Some are immaculately illustrated. Seattle Weekly, for example. We showed you this one earlier today.

Los Angeles’ LACityBeat went with a super-hero theme:

The Mercury of Portland, Ore., took a slightly more skeptical approach:

…as did the Chicago Reader. Earlier today, we showed you this cover and an unused McCain cover.

Another Portland weekly, Willamette Week, turned the Obama logo into a pie chart:

Yeah, that type is awfully small. See it larger in our earlier post.

The Boulder, Colo., Weekly also played off the Obama logo:

The Austin Chronicle used a pre-election campaign shot but the main headline — “Fun Fun  Fun” — actually refers to a local festival.

We’re bowled over by the refer: “Post-election cuddling begins on p. 24.”

The Las Vegas Weekly expressed glee that the election is finally over:

Its competitor, CityLife, used a celebration shot and proclaimed “Our long national nightmare is over.”

Hmm. Just wondering: Are there any conservative weekly tabs out there? Perhaps not. Without an extensive naughty classified section, some of these tabs might not stay afloat. Or is that a cheap shot?

The New York Press expressed incredulity that Obama won:

That might be the most interesting lead election art we’ve seen yet.

And finally, the Independent of Colorado Springs had to rub in the fact that Republicans will soon be out of the White House:

Find these and a few more in the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies’ Flickr gallery. Perhaps they’ll add more as the week goes on.

While you’re waiting, though, sneak over here to see a selection of pre-election covers. A quick sampling…

We’ll get the obvious one out of the way first. The Austin Chronicle:

A little less obvious and a little more unusual is this cover from the Source Weekly of Bend, Ore.:

Here’s an amusing one from the Philadelphia CityPaper:

Probably the best Obama logo concept we’ve seen yet from the Inlander of Spokane, Wash.:

This one from the San Antonio Current is a scream:

As is this one from the Bohemian of Santa Rosa, Calif.:

We’ll close with this naughty, just barely SFW, cover from the New York Press:
