Fundraising campaign underway to save NewsPageDesigner
We mentioned the other day that the popular news portfolio site NewsPageDesigner was losing its host and bandwidth sponsor. The founder, Tim Frank, is urging everyone to back up the work they have posted there — it’s unclear, exactly, when NPD will go away and how long it might be before a new host is found.
Around 9 p.m. or so Eastern time Friday night, a fundraising campaign was launched by Tim — the AME of the South Florida SunSentinel — Steve Dorsey of the Detroit Free Press and Matt Mansfield of Northwestern University and the president of the Society for News Design to help fund new servers.
The goal is $2,500. As of 10:15 a.m. Saturday, the effort has raised $2,110 — just $390 short of what they’re hoping for. Forty-seven people have donated to campaign.

As of 11:30 a.m., only $100 to go. What an amazingly effective fund drive this has been.

UPDATE 2:
Matt Mansfield announced on the fundraising site what happens if the campaign raises more than: $2,500.
The answer is that we collect more for other NPD needs. Why would we do that?
* The server space we asked for with the $2,500 was the least we thought we could get away with and still be operational. More space could be purchased with any extra money.
* The maintenance and hosting of the site were not figured into the $2,500, either. If we collect more, we could also put the extra toward that cost.
* We may have to “buy†the name from the folks in Maine, so if they want some money for that, well, we will be able to offer it.
The campaign will run until Dec. 15, Matt says.
At noon on the east coast, Matt and his pals are only $55 away from their goal.

Many thanks to everyone who jumped in. The response was just astounding. We had hoped that we might reach $2,500 in a week, not less than a day. The generosity is overwhelming.
A big shout-out to longtime SND member and friend of design Charles Apple for writing about this. I’m certain that, in no small part, our fledgling effort was bolstered by this post. Very cool.
As Charles mentioned, we are still looking for pledges, so please consider it. We all use NPD every day.
