Link brings in more guest illustrators for Monday fronts

Each Monday this Month, the cover of Link has been designed by a guest illustrator, photographer or designer.

This is the second time this year Link has done this. It used four male designers for its Monday covers in April — we wrote about that here.  The designers this month have been female.

Today’s cover was designed by Elizabeth Henry, an acrylic artist from Norfolk:

Hmm. That’s acrylic? Looks more like a print to us. But it’s pretty nice.

Link’s DeAnne Bradley reports:

Some of Henry’s favorite works are her paintings of women surrounded by beauty products. The paintings “comment on all the crap that we’re exposed to and expected to embrace,” she said.

This one is called “Mergirl amongst the
coral.” The Mermaid is the city symbol
of Norfolk.

Her “mushroom contortionist ” paintings are popular, too. “I enjoyed doing these because flexibility and gymnastics fascinate me. I was in dance classes growing up,” she said.

Henry admits that she wasn’t as flexible as the other girls. “There’s a sense of humor behind a lot of my stuff. I don’t necessarily think other people see it, but as long as I get the joke, it’s all right.”

The story notes that Elizabeth now calls herself “Lizzelizzel.” Find more of her work here.

The Monday, Nov. 10 cover of Link was by Portsmouth oil painter Nicole Wichman:

The cover was a montage of Nicole’s work. The piece in the bottom left, in fact, is titled “Self-Portrait 2007″ and addressed the bulimia and anorexia with which Nicole has suffered.

This one is called “We hear your whispers”:

Nicole has a fascination with skin tones. Deanne reports:

In sixth grade, she was painting nudes. That didn’t go over well with the teachers.

Her clothed subjects weren’t always popular, either. Wichman’s mom got a call from a ninth-grade teacher after Wichman painted a nun, a Ku Klux Klan member and an African man with their arms around each other.

This one is called “Among us”:

Link kicked off the cover series Nov. 3 with photography work by 17-year-old Southampton High student Kimberly Brown:

Kimberly also paints with acrylics, but the pieces featured in Link were all photography work. As Deanne reports:

She discovered photography four years ago when she had to submit photos with her Governor’s School application. Back then, she used a disposable camera to take pictures of her neighborhood. Now, she uses a Canon Powershot S3 IS.

“I take a lot of portraits. I just really enjoy the human body,” she said.

Deanne reports that Kimberly plans to study photography at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and then go into fashion photography.
