Here’s wishing a Happy VizEds Birthday to two of my former newspaper colleagues…

Karen Mitchell is an Assistant Professor on the Convergence faculty of the Missouri school of journalism. She was the photo director of The Des Moines Register when I landed there ten years ago as a brand-spanking-new manager. She was incredibly helpful and supportive. And patient.

Patrick Olsen is Editor-in-Chief of Cars.com, where he’s worked for the past three years. Before that, he was Page One Editor of the Chicago Tribune and then Deputy Editor for RedEye. I worked with him on a number of pieces during my years at the Tribune in the late 1990s.

Happy birthday to each of you! Hope you’re having a great one!

Karen and Patrick share a birthday with boxer-turned-grill salesman George Foreman, 70s-era musicians Jim Croce, Rod Stewart and Pat Benatar and advisor to the Czar of Russia Grigori Rasputin.

Plus, today is Peculiar People Day. Seriously.

In addition, today is a landmark day for me, personally: it was exactly seven years ago today that I was diagnosed with diabetes.

Type II diabetes is incurable, as you know, but it’s certainly controllable with proper care and medication. My doctors have taken very good care of me over the years, despite the fact that I eat way too much fast food and I never exercise.

At one point, I was in pretty good shape (I’ll spare you the high school football photo I’ve posted here so often). My advice to all you twenty- and thirty-year-olds: Don’t spend all day in front of a computer. Exercise. Eat right.

Because diabetes is a giant pain in the ass.

Take good care of yourselves and your bodies. That way, you can remain loyal readers of this blog for many many years.

Thanks in advance…
